The long-awaited second season of Re:ZERO − Starting Life in Another World premieres in April 2020! Season two is packed with new characters. Here, we'll introduce the witches who are key players in Re:ZERO − Starting Life in Another World! Be sure to remember them!
Witches of Sin #1: Satera, the Witch of Envy
First of all, the most famous witch in the series is Satera, the Witch of Envy. She is said to be the most terrible witch who killed other witches and destroyed half of the world approximately 400 years ago. Even now, just saying Satella's name causes the air to vibrate and elicits cold looks, making her so feared. She looks exactly like the heroine Emilia, with half-elven silver hair and a very beautiful girl. The only difference is her hair accessory and clothing, so they look alike!
Present
Apparently, approximately 400 years ago, even the three strongest warriors at the time—the first Sword Saint Reid Astrea, the Divine Dragon Volcanica, and the Sage Shaula—could not defeat it. For this reason, it remains sealed within a sealing stone near the Great Falls. While it's possible that it could be resurrected at any time, it's said that the Divine Dragon Volcanica still watches over it from beyond the Great Falls. Even after 400 years, she remains a feared presence, and is still perceived as a vicious and violent being.
The Original Satera
The original Witch of Envy, Satella, is said to be gentle and sociable. Surprisingly, Satella herself was unaware that she possessed the Witch of Envy, and it seems she had become one without even realizing it.
In fact, it seems she had both the consciousness of Satella and the consciousness of the Witch of Envy, living as a dual personality. And despite having killed the other witches, none of them (except Echidna) hate Satella. It seems there is something shady about the incident 400 years ago.
And the biggest mystery is her obsession with the main character, Natsuki Subaru. It was Satella who gave Subaru the ability to Return by Death so that he wouldn't die. Satella seems to love Subaru, and gets jealous just seeing him get along with the other witches, and she squeezes Subaru's heart to make her presence known. We're most curious about whether she had a relationship with Subaru in the past, so it will be exciting to see when she will appear in the future!
Witches of Sin 2: Echidna, the Witch of Greed
Next up is Echidna, the Witch of Greed, who appears in Season 2. She also has silver hair and a cute appearance, making her a beautiful girl who captivates anyone who lays their eyes on her.
Bulking in curiosity and a desire to explore, she greedily absorbs any knowledge she can, which is why royalty from all over the world flocked to visit Echidna during her lifetime. She's said to be the witch who interfered with history the most. He plays a key role in Season 2, and although he has a bit of a feud with Natsuki Subaru, he's still a crucial character! Incidentally, he uses the first-person pronoun "boku" ("I")!
Present
He was murdered by the Witch of Envy, Satella, approximately 400 years ago and is now deceased. However, Divine Dragon Volcanica placed her soul in a tomb to prevent Satella from being resurrected, and Roswaal's magic formula kept her connected to the real world.
She exists in a place known as a castle, harboring regrets, and in order to meet Echidna, one must enter the castle in her dreams. It may be difficult, but they can only meet if they are invited to the world Echidna has created. However, if they take a liking to her, they will be invited to a tea party and can meet.
Abilities
As her name suggests, Echidna's Witch Factor is that of a Greedy Witch. She has a greedy, inquisitive personality and a voracious desire for knowledge. She can also be a bit naive, which has put her at a disadvantage in combat. Like Roswaal L. Mathers, she can use all six elements of magic without using her authority, and all of them are powerful. However, her physical abilities are so limited that they could be considered a drawback. She's not even flexible. However, she uses her knowledge and experience to toy with Subaru and his friends.
Witches of Sin 3: Enerva, the Witch of Wrath
Next up is Minerva, the Witch of Wrath. She's a charming young girl with blonde hair tied up in a diagonal ponytail. Of course, she was consumed by Satella, the Witch of Envy, 400 years ago and is considered deceased. However, Echidna has kept her in her world. According to the author, she's the easiest witch to handle, so pure and gullible. Despite this, she retains an innocent side that shows no remorse.
Personality
The Wrathful Witch may have a scary image, but she's angry at conflict, people being physically hurt, and the world forcing tears upon them. While she's always angry, she's also a tsundere. She's not feared among witches; some even see her as a hero who heals wounds.
However, that's only from the perspective of ordinary people. From a global perspective, like the government, the harm she poses is significant. By using her powers, which we'll discuss later, she brings healing to people, but also causes natural catastrophes across the world. The fact that she herself is unaware of this makes it even more of a problem, to the point that a subjugation force was even formed.
However, Minerva's actions are all motivated by her own great sense of justice, and she wishes for world peace more earnestly than anyone else. Although she lost her life because of it, Minerva says she never regrets it, which is kind of noble and cool.
Abilities
Minerva's ability is the power of healing. Being kicked or punched by Minerva heals the damage in the affected area. While it may look quite painful, the affected person doesn't feel any pain; rather, their wounds are healed. Furthermore, even being locked in a joint lock, stabbed with a knife, or slammed into the ground hard enough to leave a crater are not considered injuries, but rather are treated. However, emotional wounds or curses cannot be healed.
Witches of Sin #4: Sekhmet, the Witch of Sloth
Let me introduce you to Sekhmet, the Witch of Sloth! Another popular character, she is a tall witch who possesses the Witch of Sloth gene. Her crimson-purple hair has never been cut, and her clothes have never been changed, so they are noticeably dusty and torn in places. Of course, she never bathes. And despite being a former human, she doesn't need to eat or defecate. She's truly lazy! (lol) By the way, it's pretty rare to see her standing; she's usually sitting.
Personality
Originally, she provided for normal needs, but since transforming into the Witch of Sloth, she has basically continued to behave as described above (lol). However, she is the most pacifist among the witches, and is often tasked with stopping conflicts between witches. Perhaps conflicts are a pain because of her laziness, but she is not considered particularly dangerous in the world. However, it's said that conflicts escalate due to each witch's strong personality.
She also acts as a guardian to Typhon, the Witch of Pride. While it's unclear whether they are actually related by blood, their bond is so strong that she calls him "mother." The Witch of Sloth is thus the most humane witch.
Abilities
She ranks among the top 10 strongest characters in the series. She's generally pacifist, so she doesn't feel like it, but when she gets motivated, she's strong enough to instantly annihilate all the witches (except the Witch of Envy) in a combined attack.
It was Sekhmet who beat up Divine Dragon Volcanica, one of the people who sealed away the Witch of Envy. It's unclear what caused the gentle Sekhmet to become so enraged, but it seems certain that something terrible will happen when she reaches her extremely low boiling point.
The exact nature of her abilities has not been made public, but it appears she is capable of unleashing attacks of incredible destructive power. What's even more terrifying is that she can easily make them lighten without any movement. This is someone you should never let your guard down against!
Witches of Sin #5: Daphne, the Witch of Gluttony
Next up is Daphne, the Witch of Gluttony, the second most dangerous person in the world. She's in a large black coffin, her hands and feet bound, and her eyes covered with a cloth. Despite the rather heavy atmosphere and unique worldview, she is actually a very small, slender girl.
She speaks in a relaxed manner, with drawn-out sentences, creating a stark contrast to her striking appearance. She's considered the second most dangerous witch in the world after the Witch of Envy, Satella. In fact, even her appearance alone is enough to make her seem dangerous! (lol)
Personality
She's constantly battling hunger. This suffering becomes clear when Subaru experiences the same hunger as Daphne. He becomes so hungry that he vomits and wants to die, and experiences Daphne's suffering firsthand. As a result, Daphne's mind is constantly preoccupied with food. Daphne is always seeking the happiness and joy that comes from having a full stomach, as well as the sense of accomplishment that comes with elation.
Daphne's actions are driven by her desire for food and her desire to make people happy through food. However, she is a witch, and it is because of this that Daphne created dangerous magical beasts such as the White Whale. It seems that her reason for creating them was to prevent people from starving to death by eating them. However, people now live in fear of the magical beasts.
Abilities
If you encounter Daphne, there are two things to keep in mind. First, do not look into her eyes. Her left eye, whether due to her power or not, is known as the Demon Eye of Hunger. Anyone who makes eye contact with her will suffer the same agony of hunger as Daphne, becoming so hungry that they unconsciously bite off their own fingers.
Her right eye has yet to be revealed, but it appears to possess even greater powers than her left eye. Second, do not touch it. Daphne eats with her mouth, of course, but she also eats with her hair and skin, so if she touches them, she'll be devoured in an instant. She's quite psychopathic, but she can still converse to some extent! (lol)
Witches of Sin 6: Typhon, the Prideful Witch
The sixth witch is Typhon, also known as the Prideful Witch. She's the youngest of the witches. She has green hair and a cute white dress, and she's always energetic and lively. She is pure and innocent, and yet too young in both appearance and heart to understand complex matters or thoughts.
Present
At the start of the story, she is already considered deceased. She was a witch who was not considered dangerous by society, and people wondered if such a witch even existed. Typhon's end was apparently drowning after being submerged in a flood. The reason is unknown, but it may have been due to Typhon's actions. She now lives on in Echidna's spiritual realm, where she meets Subaru. By the way, he calls Subaru "Bal" by his nickname!
Abilities
Typhon worked as an executioner during his lifetime. The standard for executing someone was whether or not the criminal had a sense of guilt. Anyone deemed a criminal would have a part of their body destroyed, like shattered glass. Those with a sense of guilt felt pain, while those without a sense of guilt felt no pain at all. As an executioner, she executed many people, but everyone has at least a little bit of guilt in their lives.
As such, it's also true that she executed many people who didn't need to be executed. Also, when she gets upset, she seems to go on a rampage that the other witches can't control. So, her good friends Sekhmet and Camilla are the ones who keep her happy.
Witches of Sin 7: Carmilla, the Witch of Lust
Last but not least, we have Carmilla, the Witch of Lust. She's a cute girl with pink hair, a long scarf that drags on the ground, and a constantly unsure expression and pose. She's timid and unsure of herself, stuttering every word, and possessing an irritating tone of voice that can be quite frustrating for viewers.
According to Echidna, Carmilla is a bundle of self-preservation, and everything she does stems from her own self-love. However, she gets along fairly well with the other witches, and is always around Typhon as a playmate.
Everything is Love
Carmilla's past is tragic. She was originally an ordinary village girl. Her ordinary life was turned upside down when her witch factor's lust manifested.
Until then, Carmilla had been loved by her fiancé, her family, and the people of her village, but she was attacked and taken away by a certain country. Enraged, the people started a rebellion to save Carmilla, but due to the Power of Lust, the villagers' rebellion escalated with each passing day, and before they knew it, Carmilla had become a tragic heroine and no one could look at her anymore.
The Power of Lust allows Carmilla to transform into her ideal form, so everyone seems to love her, but they don't actually see her. Perhaps Carmilla's current personality was the result of her wishing to be loved by herself alone. She can make people fall in love with her and manipulate them, but they never love her for who she really is. Carmilla is the most loved person in the world, but she is also starving for love.
Abilities
As mentioned above, Carmilla's power of lust allows those who see her to see her as a captivating figure. When Subaru first saw Carmilla, Rem appeared. Anyone who sees her becomes mesmerized, unable to take their eyes off her, forgetting to breathe and their heart stopping.
And they die just like that (lol). Apparently, when Carmilla walks down the street, some mothers are so enchanted by her that they die laughing. Another ability is the ability to speak to the heart of someone's loved one in their voice. Using this ability, Subaru was freed from his descent into darkness. Incidentally, his combat ability is such that if his narcissism explodes, he can kill a rabbit without even looking.
