Speaking of masterpieces, naturally there are many memorable scenes. In fact, there is no masterpiece without some great scenes... and of course Re:ZERO − Starting Life in Another World also has many great scenes... or rather, every episode is a storm of great scenes! From slightly funny scenes to scenes that will make you clench your hands in excitement, there are a variety of great scenes. So today we'll be introducing a ranking of those great scenes! We'll be introducing everything from sweet scenes between Subaru and Rem to terrifying scenes that you can't take your eyes off of!
Tenth Place: From Serious to Gag, and Back to Serious Again
Our tenth choice is the scene just before Subaru jumps off a cliff! Ram, believing that Subaru has some connection to Rem's death, corners Subaru right up to the cliff. Meanwhile, Subaru has his trusty ally, Beatrice, by his side. Beatrice confronts Ram and tries to get Subaru out of the territory in accordance with their contract. Who will win, Beatrice or Ram? Just when you think the battle is about to begin, Subaru tugs Beatrice's hair in a playful manner. Subaru then turns his back on the two and jumps off a cliff, but when Beatrice says "Wait!" it's not her usual nasty voice, but a genuine voice of concern for Subaru.
Ninth Place: The Friendship Between Subaru, Ferris, and Julius
My ninth choice is the scene where Subaru's mind is taken over by Petelgeuse and he begs Ferris and Julius to kill him. With his mind and body taken over by Petelgeuse, Subaru resists with all his might and begs Ferris and Julius to kill him while he still has some sanity. However, the two are hesitant to accept the request. Julius, in particular, strongly opposes it. Still, to grant Subaru's wish, Ferris used magic to put Subaru on the brink of death, telling him, "You can hate me." Seeing Ferris's tears of regret, Julius hesitated until the very end, but he finally aimed his sword at Subaru and delivered the final blow.
Eighth Place: Wilhelm and Theresa's First Love
The story I chose for eighth place is set a little earlier than the main story, when Wilhelm was still young. Wilhelm is already an old man in the main story, but the Wilhelm of this time has a completely different vibe to him than he does now: a handsome tsundere! The story depicts how he met Theresia, who would later become his wife, and one of the most memorable scenes is when he challenges her to a sword fight and takes the sword from her! It's Wilhelm's way of saying "throw away your sword and become my wife," as if he's not good at expressing himself well. He was always saying he "hated" flowers, but now he says he "no longer hates them," showing his tsundere side as always.
Seventh Place: Ram's Character Breakdown at the Snow Festival
Seventh place goes to Ram, whose character breaks down in the movie! This is a must-see scene for Ram fans. Ram is known for her sharp tongue and almost never smiles, but her character completely breaks down at the Snow Festival in the movie! When Subaru gives her a low score for the snow sculpture she created, she enthusiastically asks, "So...?" and strikes a strange pose, hoping for a higher score. However, when she's told that her score remains the same, Ram lets out a strange cry, unable to hide her shock. Later, Roswaal also gives her a low score, further shocking her.
Sixth Place: Rem and Subaru After Defeating the Demonic Beast
Our sixth place pick is the scene after the demonic beast is defeated, where Rem becomes completely lovey-dovey! At the beginning of the demonic beast defeat, Rem still distrusts Subaru and doesn't fully trust him. However, when she enters the forest where the demonic beasts live to save the children, and sees him risking his life to protect them, her doubts gradually disappear. Then, when the boss, Ulgarm, appeared, Subaru let Rem and Ram escape while he acted as a decoy, and all doubts vanished. After Subaru recovered from his injuries, the two talked, resulting in a lovestruck Rem.
Fifth Place: AKA "Rem's Boob Airbag"
Our fifth place pick is the scene during the battle with the White Whale, where "Rem's Boob Airbag" was activated! To lure the white whale, Subaru stands on the whale's horn, then jumps off, releasing the witch's scent with a remark that hints at "Return by Death," attracting the white whale. Just before the moment, Rem pulls him back with a chain and he returns safely to Patrasche... but he lands face-first on Rem's chest! If it had been a chopping block, Subaru would have suffered major damage, but thanks to Rem's overflowing maternal love, he was able to return unscathed (lol).
Rem's expression at that moment...
Now, Rem pulls Subaru to her with the chain and rescues him. Usually, in romantic comedies, if a man buries his face in a woman's chest, even if it's an accident, a slap is bound to follow. But in Rem's case, she's smiling! Far from being embarrassed and slapping him, she carries him princess-style and utters the meaningful words, "Thank you for the meal," with a happy look on her face. Seriously... I'm sure Rem fans across the country were envious and shed tears of blood.
Fourth Place: Subaru and Crusch After the Battle of the White Whale
Fourth place goes to the scene where Subaru and Crusch talk after the battle of the White Whale. Crusch expresses her gratitude to Subaru and tells him that he also deserves credit for defeating the White Whale, but Subaru remains humble. Despite this, Crusch tells Subaru that she still wants to welcome him into her family. However, Subaru refuses, saying that he cannot do so because he wants to make Emilia king. Crusch knew from the beginning that Subaru would answer that way, but when he actually said it, she seemed a little hesitant. Even so, Crusch vowed to remain friendly to Subaru, even if they were enemies in the Royal War. Subaru also seemed to find Crusch attractive as a woman, saying that he would have been in danger (and wavered) if it weren't for Emilia and Rem.
Third Place: Rem, the Proposal of a Lifetime
My third place pick is the scene where Rem encourages Subaru when he loses confidence and tries to run away. At this point, Subaru proposes that he and Rem run away from everything and live together somewhere far away. This is an ideal request for Rem, who loves Subaru very much, but Rem continues to encourage him, telling him how she feels, and eventually helps him get back on his feet. I actually wanted to rank this scene first or second, but afterward, Subaru makes a remark that infuriates Rem fans: "I love Emilia, so I want to help her. I want Rem to help me, too." So, I put it third (lol).
Second Place: The Final Episode, Subaru and Emilia's Reunion
Second place goes to the final episode, where Subaru and Emilia reunite for the first time in a long time! The scene where Subaru jumps onto the carriage to save Emilia and the others is played in slow motion, but it's one of the coolest scenes in the series. After defusing the explosives, Subaru wakes up to find himself on Emilia's lap. The two happily recount their past experiences. Emilia's gestures and tears make this a truly adorable scene.
Patrasche, the Unsung Hero
Patrasche was a key player in the battle against the White Whale, and she demonstrates her skills to the fullest in the final episode. When a massive explosion threatens Subaru, Patrasche curls up and lies to the ground to protect him. Thanks to this, Subaru escapes without serious injury. Patrasche is so talented! Incidentally, Patrasche, who was hit directly by the blast, suffered burns but was unharmed.
Number 1: The Scene Where Rem Takes That "Promise"
Number 1 is the scene where Rem asks Subaru, "Will you stay by my side forever?" and gets his promise, "I'll beg you on my knees." It's no wonder... I bet most people who rank the best scenes would rank this one at number one. It's such a devastatingly memorable scene. If she asks you to do something like that while crying, and you agree, and then she says, "I've got your word. You can't back out now," with this gesture... I'm sure men everywhere would be knocked out in less than a second. It makes you wonder how much Subaru loves Emilia, even after all this!
Ranking of the Best Scenes
So far, what do you think of these memorable scenes? Even after watching it again, the Rem ratio is pretty high (lol). I wanted to include Wilhelm's fight with the White Whale, but this is the ranking for now... Which scene was the most memorable for you?
