From street thugs to Elsa, monsters, the White Whale, the Witch's Cult, and more... Re:ZERO − Starting Life in Another World pits you against a variety of formidable foes. Subaru often finds himself in literally life-threatening battles. Other characters also engage in thrilling battles. This time, we'll be showcasing some of the coolest fight scenes! We'll rank them not just based on character strength, but also on how cool their fighting style is.
Tenth Place: Subaru vs. Tonchinkan
Our tenth place pick is Subaru's first battle scene! His opponents are clearly minor characters named Ton Chin Kan. However, to Subaru, who was a school dropout in the real world, they are clearly formidable opponents... or so it would seem. However, Subaru had been working out every day even while he was away from school, so he takes the initiative to fight the three thugs and puts up a great fight. Every time you die early on, the save point will return to before you met the three, so you'll have to fight them multiple times, but it's also fun to watch Subaru's combat ability gradually improve.
Ninth Place: Felt vs. Elsa
My ninth choice is the scene where Felt leaps at Elsa in a fit of rage after Elsa kills Grandpa Rom! This fight scene is too short to be called a "battle"—Felt is defeated in an instant—but Felt, using the protection of the wind to move quickly and leap into the air, is just so cool! Subaru, paralyzed and unable to move, tells him, "Sorry for getting you involved," and then attacks Elsa! Felt's attack mercilessly misses and is killed in one hit by Elsa's attack, but it's a fast-paced and memorable fight scene.
Eighth Place: Emilia & Puck vs. Elsa
Eighth place goes to the scene where Emilia and Puck fight Elsa. Despite being the main heroine of the series, Emilia's fight scenes are largely absent. One of the few scenes featuring Emilia is this one early on, when she fights Elsa. Together with Puck, she uses ice magic to engage Elsa in an offensive and defensive battle. What really stood out in this scene was Erza's movements! As Emilia and Puck fired off a barrage of ice pillars, Erza quickly ran around, sometimes even clinging to walls to dodge the attacks. Emilia, who kept up with the swift movements, fought better than expected, making for a truly impressive performance.
Seventh Place: Julius & Subaru vs. Petelgeuse
Our seventh place pick is the battle scene between Julius and Petelgeuse! Betelgeuse has a special ability called the "invisible hand" that only Subaru can see, but the way he avoids it is by connecting Julius's senses with Subaru's, allowing Julius to fight as seen through Subaru's field of vision. Speaking of Julius and Subaru, they had a strained relationship in the past after a dispute that led to a wooden sword duel where Subaru was completely beaten, but this time they trust each other enough to entrust their lives to each other as they go into battle. Julius also uses spirits in battle, so another point is that he looks beautiful and cool.
Sixth Place: Ram vs. the Herd of Demonic Beasts
Sixth place goes to Ram's battle scene in the Demonic Beast Forest. Subaru and Rem act together from the middle of the game, so Rem has many battle scenes. Ram, however, barely has any fight scenes, and even ends up dying before you know it... She loses her horn and runs out of mana, meaning she can't fight for long. But the sight of Ram fighting is cool! Her attacks use incredibly sharp wind magic, like a wind cutter. Her stylish, one-by-one slashes of Ulgarm are truly powerful! Incidentally, when she still had her horns as a child, she was even more overwhelmingly powerful than she is now.
Fifth Place: Crusch vs. White Whale
Fifth place goes to Crusch's battle against the White Whale! Crusch is a true Joan of Arc-like figure, commanding military strategy and leading the charge to inspire her allies. Crusch's incredible presence isn't just her impressive presence; she's also incredibly skilled in both the arts and martial arts, and a swordsman at the same time. Her most powerful move is her "Hundred-Man One-Sword" technique, which sweeps away all enemies within her sight. Using wind mana, she unleashes long-range sword attacks, dealing powerful damage even to the White Whale in the sky. Crusch's charm is also evident in the scene where she inspires her comrades, who have lost their will to fight in the face of the White Whale's overwhelming power. This scene is a must-see.
Fourth Place: Roswaal vs. Boss Garm
Our fourth-place pick is the battle scene featuring the mysterious man Roswaal. While he appears to have engaged in a duel with Beatrice after Rem's death due to some kind of sorcery, this battle with Boss Garm was his first real fight. That said, the battle was decided in an instant. Subaru used fire magic to wipe out the monsters that Rem and Ram had struggled with, and even wiped out the boss Garm with a single blow. Another cool element was how he effortlessly descended from the sky after the battle. Incidentally, the weapon Roswaal used this time was "Ulgoa." There is an even higher-level weapon, "Algoa," but at Roswaal's level, it seems that Ulgoa is the only weapon with this much power.
Third Place: Wilhelm vs. White Whale
Our third place pick is the fight scene between Wilhelm and the White Whale! It's packed with highlights, and it's comparable to the first and second places. What's amazing about Wilhelm's fight scene is that he's a pure swordsman, using no magic in battle! While fighting like Crusch's magical swordsmanship is great, there's something romantic about facing a powerful enemy with simple swordsmanship. Wilhelm's fight against the White Whale is simply dynamic! She stabbed a sword into her body and ran around it, gouged out a giant eye and raised it to the sky, and when she thought she'd been eaten by the White Whale, a pear emerged from inside her body...everything she did was simply out of the ordinary.
Second Place: Demon Rem vs. a Horde of Demonic Beasts
Second place goes to the scene where demonic Rem fights a horde of demonic beasts. While Rem's regular fighting scenes are cool, her demonic transformation is even more brutal and cooler than usual! She put up some impressive fights in the battle against the Witch's Cult, but the coolest scene was definitely the one where she fought a horde of demonic beasts. Her insanity was palpable as she smashed the monsters, chanting "Beast, beast, beast, witch!" Her almost suicidal fighting style often resulted in her taking damage, but this only adds to Rem's coolness.
Number 1: Reinhard vs. Elsa
Our pick for the coolest fight scene is the one between Reinhard and Elsa. Dubbed a man who can only become a hero, the author himself has stated that he is "the strongest in the world" and "impossible to defeat." Even if the horned Ram and a serious Puck band together, they would still be no match for Reinhard. This battle with Elsa is one of Reinhard's rare battle scenes! And yet, the fight is decided in a single blow. Reinhard's holy sword, the Dragon Sword Raid, decides when it is time to draw it, and the sword he was using at the time was just an ordinary one he'd picked up. Despite that, with one swing, it blew away the entire area.
Reinhard's strength isn't just in his sword skills!
When you hear the name Sword Saint Reinhard, you probably imagine a fighting style that specializes in swordsmanship, but Reinhard seems to have mastered not only his sword skills but also his martial arts. He delivers a single right middle kick to Elsa, who moves at lightning-fast speed and uses a knife as a weapon. In a previous timeline, Subaru had also delivered a middle kick to Elsa, but this one seemed to inflict more damage than the previous one. Incidentally, Reinhard's sword techniques have the ability to absorb all the mana in the air, which is what creates the power of his powerful sword attacks.
Awesome Fight Scenes
So far, we've ranked the coolest fight scenes. While Reinhard's strength and flashy swordplay are undeniably impressive, Rem's demonic transformation and Felt's explosive power are also hard to beat. But ultimately, what can be said is... Elsa's presence! Despite appearing early on, her swift movements make her a master of epic fight scenes. (lol) And what's more, he's so tenacious that he even manages to survive against Reinhard in the end... While he's perfectly suited to the role, I'd like to see him ranked as the main character in a list of coolest battles.
