Asahioka Branch School is the main setting for Non Non Biyori. There are only a few students, with the entire school having only five in total! Miyauchi Renge

The main character and the youngest first grader. Although she looks her age, her thoughts and behavior are quite unique and she is a genius. She gets 100 points on tests as a matter of course. However, she has a naming sense that allows her to give animals names that ordinary people would never understand, and when she drew a picture of her sister Hikage, she drew a very unique picture titled "Suffering".
Ichijo Hotaru

A fifth-grade elementary school girl who moved from Tokyo to the countryside where Renge and her friends live in the first episode. She looks mature, and at 164cm tall, is the same height as an adult woman. Hotaru is in love with Komari-senpai, who attends the same school! She loves Komari so much that she has made a large number of Komari dolls, commonly known as "Komagurumi". Whenever Komari gets involved, her eyes change color and she becomes unable to see anything else around her.
Koshigaya Komari

She is a second-year junior high school student and the oldest of the girls attending the school, but she is quite small at less than 140 cm, which she seems to be concerned about. As for her personality, she is still childish in many ways, and her younger sister Natsumi always plays with her. She is often called "Koma-chan," but she doesn't like the nickname because it means "small."

She is a first-year junior high school student, one year younger than her older sister Komari. She is very active and can't stay still, so she is always getting into mischief and is scolded by her mother and others. She seems to get along well with Renge and is particularly close to him, calling each other "Natsun" and "Renchon." She is one of the few characters who can communicate with her brother, and as a child she loved him so much that she even considered marrying him.
Koshigaya Suguru

He is the older brother of Natsumi and Komari, a third-year junior high school student, and the only male character in the series. He rarely speaks, and there are no conversation scenes in the anime! There have been a few times when he has tried to speak, but he never made a sound. She is talented in many areas, and although she looks quiet, she plays the electric guitar at home.

She is a teacher at the Asahioka Branch School where Renge and her friends attend, and Renge's older sister. She often falls asleep at home and at school, which is probably why her eyes are always closed. Although he is a teacher, he often incurs resentment by making the students help plant rice in the rice fields on field trips... Once when he went out on the train, he fell asleep on a bench and was left alone at the station.

A first-year high school student who graduated from Asahioka Branch School. Renge's other older sister. After graduating, she moves to Tokyo to attend high school, and begins to brag about it and act like a city girl, but when Hotaru, a real city girl, moves away, she's at a disadvantage... Her face resembles Renge's, but her mind is completely different, and she's a typical idiot character, similar to Natsumi.
Kagayama Kaede

A 20-year-old graduate of Asahigaoka Branch School who runs a candy store. He fell in love with Renge after taking care of her as a baby for a day as a child, and he still has many sweet moments even after Renge becomes an elementary school student. She was also the first person to wear Renge's trademark ribbon, and has a strange relationship with Renge that is like that of a sister or a mother and daughter.
Fujimiya Konomi

A graduate of Asahioka Branch School and a third-year high school student. She lives next door to Komari and her friends, and often comes to play. She's a true country girl who attends the high school in her hometown, but she looks like a pretty older sister and speaks more like a city girl than Hikage, who moved to Tokyo, and she doesn't have an accent. She also likes to play pranks, like lying to Renge about being a youkai and teasing her.
