There are various eye techniques that appear in NARUTO, but the Sharingan, which can only be activated by members of the Uchiha clan, is a popular and powerful eye technique within the series. Additionally, the shape of the Mangekyo Sharingan and the abilities themselves differ for each character. So what shape does the Mangekyo Sharingan take for each character, and what abilities does it possess? This time, we'll take a thorough look at the Sharingan of the Uchiha clan, who were particularly active in NARUTO.

What is the Sharingan?

The Sharingan is a unique physical trait passed down to certain members of the Uchiha clan, and is also the clan's kekkei genkai. When activated, the eyes turn red, and up to three magatama-like marks appear in the eyes. The conditions for awakening the Sharingan are said to occur mainly when a member of the Uchiha clan "struggles with the loss of a great love or their own disappointment," and in the story, it is activated when Uchiha Sasuke tries to save his friend Uzumaki Naruto. Using the Sharingan allows one to instantly copy an opponent's techniques and enhances the ability to see through genjutsu. When the Sharingan is further strengthened, it becomes the Mangekyo Sharingan.

What is the Mangekyo Sharingan?

The Mangekyo Sharingan is a more advanced technique than the Sharingan, and it is said that only a select few of the Uchiha clan can awaken it. Each Mangekyo Sharingan has its own unique eye pattern, and it is said that it is awakened by experiencing the death of a loved one and feeling deep regret and sadness over the incident. The right and left eyes of the Mangekyo Sharingan also have their own unique abilities. However, the more one uses it, the worse their eyesight becomes, so by transplanting the Mangekyo Sharingan of a close relative, one can obtain the Eternal Mangekyo Sharingan.

Uchiha Sasuke is the wielder of the Mangekyo Sharingan, which was awakened after he killed Uchiha Itachi in a deadly battle. The Mangekyo Sharingan is shaped like a flower petal. The first time the Sharingan was awakened was when he tried to protect Uzumaki Naruto, and both of these events are depicted in the story. He obtained the Eternal Mangekyo Sharingan by transplanting Uchiha Itachi's Sharingan, and gained its powers during the Fourth Shinobi World War.

Sasuke Uchiha's Mangekyo Sharingan's ability is the Kagutsuchi Fire Release technique in his right eye. With Flame Release: Kagutsuchi no Mikoto, he can freely control Amaterasu's black flames. This allows him to extinguish the black flames or ignite only a portion of them, improving his control. He can also use Amaterasu's black flames as a long-range attack by changing their shape. His left eye is Amaterasu, and he can burn anything he looks at with black flames that never burn out. Uchiha Sasuke has obtained the Eternal Mangekyo Sharingan, which allows him to materialize the perfected form of Susanoo. This allows him to create a perfected form of Susanoo like a samurai.

Uchiha Itachi also awakened the Mangekyou Sharingan, which resembles a windmill or a Fuuma shuriken. He awakened the Mangekyou Sharingan when he killed his best friend, Uchiha Shisui. However, he did not attempt to kill Shisui himself; rather, after Shisui had been mortally wounded by Danzo, he accepted Shisui's request to receive one of Shisui's eyes, and then killed him.

Uchiha Itachi's Mangekyo Sharingan has the same Amaterasu eye as his younger brother, Uchiha Sasuke. This allows him to burn anything he looks at with black flames. However, it can only be erased using a sealing technique, and he cannot erase it or change shape freely on his own. The Mangekyo Sharingan in Uchiha Itachi's left eye has the ability called Tsukuyomi. By looking into the eyes of Uchiha Itachi, who possesses the Mangekyo Sharingan, he can cast Tsukuyomi and destroy the opponent's mind. He can even control the space, time, and mass of those he makes eye contact with, allowing him to inflict various forms of torture. Furthermore, Uchiha Itachi can produce Susanoo, although it is not in its complete form. A normal Susanoo can be activated when he awakens his Mangekyo Sharingan and possesses two different abilities in each eye.

Uchiha Shisui also awakened the Mangekyo Sharingan. Uchiha Shisui is Uchiha Itachi's best friend, and is an exceptionally talented Konoha ninja, as well as a kind young man who cares about his village. Although he barely appears in the story, his name is well known and he is renowned as a ninja. Uchiha Shisui's Mangekyo Sharingan is shaped like a shuriken. The circumstances under which it is activated have not been revealed, and the rest of his family has not been revealed either, making him a ninja shrouded in mystery.

Only one of Uchiha Shisui's Mangekyo Sharingan's abilities is known. The other eye was stolen by Danzo. Uchiha Shisui's Mangekyo Sharingan ability is known as "Kotoamatsukumi," a technique that allows him to control his target without them realizing they've been put under an illusion, making it an especially powerful technique among the Mangekyo Sharingan techniques. However, it also has a downside: once used, the power is lost, and it takes several decades for him to be able to use it again. Due to this powerful ability, Shisui's life is in danger.

The Shape of Uchiha Obito's Sharingan

The fourth person to awaken the Mangekyo Sharingan is Uchiha Obito. Uchiha Obito was a former genin of Konoha Village and a member of the same squad as Hatake Kakashi. However, during a mission he was crushed under a rock and half of his body was crushed. He was later saved by Uchiha Madara, but was brainwashed into becoming the mastermind behind the Fourth Shinobi World War. Uchiha Obito's Mangekyou Sharingan has a unique, sharp shape, resembling a three-bladed shuriken with a sickle attached. He first awakened his Sharingan when he went to rescue Rin on a mission alongside Hatake Kakashi. He also awakened his Mangekyou Sharingan the moment he saw Rin being made a jinchuriki and going to be killed by Hatake Kakashi. There are two possibilities for this: it is possible that he awakened because Hatake Kakashi killed Rin with his own hands, or it is because he witnessed his beloved Rin's death right before his eyes.

Uchiha Obito's Mangekyo Sharingan power is called Kamui, and allows him to transport himself to another dimension. This allows him to slip through attacks and move freely, and he can automatically slip through surprise attacks, making him very powerful defensively. He can also transport others to another dimension, but Obito's eyes are weak against this, and it has the disadvantage that it takes time to do so, and he cannot automatically slip through for more than five minutes.

Although Kakashi Hatake is not a member of the Uchiha clan, he was able to use the Sharingan after receiving one of Obito Uchiha's eyes as a child. Furthermore, he gained the ability to use the Mangekyo Sharingan after killing Rin with his own hands. Since it was originally Uchiha Obito's Mangekyo Sharingan, it has the same shape as Uchiha Obito's Mangekyo Sharingan.

Hatake Kakashi's Mangekyo Sharingan ability, like that of Uchiha Obito, allows him to project anything he sees into another dimension. This makes it extremely powerful, as it is possible to send parts of an enemy's body or even explosions themselves into another dimension. However, it also has a drawback: using it causes the user's eyesight to deteriorate. At the end of the story, he obtains the Eternal Mangekyo Sharingan by transplanting Uchiha Obito's eyes, and is able to use the completed form, Susanoo.

Uchiha Madara's Sharingan Shape

Uchiha Madara is a surviving ninja from the time of the founding of the Leaf Village. The circumstances under which Uchiha Madara awakened his Mangekyo Sharingan are not mentioned, but it was during the war, and his younger brother Uchiha Izuna awakened it at the same time, and by receiving Izuna's eyes he obtained the Eternal Mangekyo Sharingan. Madara's Mangekyo Sharingan has a shape similar to a hole in the magatama of his Sharingan, which is connected together.

Uchiha Madara has awakened the Mangekyo Sharingan and possesses a unique technique, but does not use it in the story. Instead, he uses a powerful technique unique to the Rinnegan called Rinbo-Hengoku. This technique allows him to create another version of himself in an invisible world called Rinbo, and use that to attack.
