The first season of the anime series, Miss Kobayashi's Dragon Maid, was released in 2017 and gained rabid popularity, and this summer it's returning as Miss Kobayashi's Dragon Maid S! As this marks the first anime adaptation in four years since the first season, Dragon Maid fans are surely excited. Many readers may have re-familiarized themselves with the story and characters of Dragon Maid in response to the announcement of the second season. Meanwhile, there are likely many who weren't interested in Dragon Maid when the first season was airing, but only became fans later. This time, we'd like to introduce the most popular characters from Miss Kobayashi's Dragon Maid in a ranking format, for those who've forgotten the characters because it's been so long, and for those who are thinking of watching Dragon Maid after the second season.
1st Place: Kanna (Kanna Kamui)
Even among the many dragons featured in this series, Kanna is a rare dragon who has not yet reached adulthood.
Banished
While Kanna appears calm and collected, she can easily get into serious accidents. In her original world, she broke a jewel known as the Dragon Jewel, and was banished to the human world.
Her position is not yet decided
Like Thor and Iruru, Kanna's position as a "Harmony Faction" or "Chaos Faction" is not yet decided.
Season 2 may focus on Kanna!!
Kanna's adorable appearance and entertaining behavior have made her extremely popular in this series, even spawning a spin-off. Furthermore, this series features a fairly serious story centered around Kanna, which may be explored in the second season of the anime. This could further focus on Kanna and further increase her popularity.
2nd Place: Thor
Of the many dragons in this series, this character has the most screen time and is the most active.
Main Character!
She is like the heroine of this series, and when we talk about "Miss Kobayashi's Dragon Maid," we are referring to Thor. Thor makes a somewhat risky entrance, curled up in the mountains with serious injuries and near death, only to be rescued by a drunk Kobayashi and brought into the house. Since then, feeling indebted to Kobayashi for saving him, she seems to have worked as a maid in his home.
Consistently Popular!!
Thor is a crucial character in the story, so it's no surprise that he's so popular. However, his carefully portrayed emotions also make him one of the most popular characters. Thor's sociable, slightly eccentric, and cheerful personality make him hard to make enemies, and there's probably no reader who dislikes him. His appeal to everyone is a testament to his strength.
3rd Place: Fafnir
A rare male dragon in this work. Unlike Thor and Kanna, he has a cold personality and gives off a somewhat cool impression.
Takita's House is Where He Lives
He lives with Takita, a colleague of Kobayashi's, and devotes himself to otaku activities every day. He seems to get along well with Takita, and their interactions are carefully depicted. However, his relationships with other characters are tenuous, and he exudes a somewhat similar vibe to Takita.
Differences from Thor and Kanna
From a human perspective, Fafnir may be perceived as "heartless" or "cold." However, the dragons in this work, such as Kanna and Thor, may simply have a similar sensibility to humans, while Fafnir's sensibility may actually be closer to that of a true dragon.
The Most Dragon-like Dragon
In any case, among the many dragons who have become accustomed to humans, Fafnir is arguably the one who has the most dragon-like sensibilities and has adapted to the human world.
4th Place: Makoto Takiya
Fafnir's roommate and a colleague of Kobayashi's. At first glance, he appears to be just a handsome guy, but his true identity is that of a serious otaku.
"Yansu!"
As an otaku, Takitani wears round glasses and squirrel-like front teeth, making it easy to tell which Takitani he is just by looking at him. Incidentally, he even ends his sentences with "Yansu!", a strict nod to his character's personality.
Bystander
While this series generally features characters with assertive personalities, Takiya, like Kobayashi and Fafnir, seems to prefer to remain a bystander and observe those around him. Rather than actively entering into relationships, Takiya's policy seems to be to avoid interfering in order to protect his own comfortable environment. Perhaps the secret to Takiya's popularity lies in the fact that he is a hardcore otaku, yet acts with strong conviction.
5th Place: Ruko (Quetzalcoatl)
Like Thor and Kanna, Ruko is a dragon. In her human form, she has flashy blonde hair, heterochromia, and unusually large breasts. Her unique features make her the most visually striking character in the series.
There's a great darkness hidden within...
However, due to her personality being more of a "bystander," she also has a tendency to disappear quickly when conflicts or disputes arise. While she may appear cheerful, Rucoa is a character harboring a great darkness within.
Lucoa x Shota
And the secret to Lucoa's popularity is undoubtedly her "extreme interactions" with her master, Shota. She calmly engages in dangerous interactions with Shota that would have led to arrest in a human setting, sending many readers into a frenzy. The secret to Lucoa's popularity is her extreme interactions with Shota. By the way, the name Shota definitely comes from the word "shotacon"...
6th Place: Iruru
Like Thor and Kanna, Iruru is a dragon who came from another world. Unlike Lucoa's "bystander" side, Iruru is a member of the "Chaos" extremist faction. Shortly after her first appearance, she engages in combat with Thor, attempting to destroy the city. While Iruru did not appear in Season 1, it has been revealed that she will be appearing in Season 2, making her a character worth watching.
The Gap with Thor
While the two become closer as the story progresses, it seems likely that they will remain on bad terms for a while from the start of the second season. Iruru's rivalry with Thor is also a factor in her popularity, so I'm looking forward to seeing their bickering. Either way, it's safe to say that this character will become even more popular from here on out thanks to the anime.
7th Place: Elma
This dragon also came from another world. Unlike Iruru, she belongs to the somewhat more peaceful "Harmony" faction. As a result, when she visited Kobayashi's house to retrieve Thor, she was successfully persuaded, and ended up living in the human world just like Thor.
A Talented Person
Though Elma may be a bit of a slow learner, she used her skills to help increase the company's workforce by streamlining its operations. Season 2 will focus on Elma's accomplishments, making her a popular character, just like Kanna and Iruru.
8th Place: Kobayashi-san
This is the main character of this work. The only edgy character is a single, unremarkable office worker with a "serious maid fetish." Despite this, Kobayashi accidentally saves the dying Thor with a holy sword while drunk and wandering into the mountains. Then, under the influence of alcohol, he ends up letting Thor live in his house.
Ranking Due to the Main Character
Kobayashi's popularity is not particularly high compared to other characters in this series. This series focuses on characters of the dragon race. For this reason, the main character, Kobayashi, has a somewhat subdued personality.
9th Place: Shota Magado
He is an elementary school student with magical blood. He is a rare character in the human world who possesses a fantasy element: "he has magical blood."
A Boy's Resolve
Shota is popular for his cute appearance, but in the story, he also has a manly side, as he worries about his own role as Lucoa's master.
