"Hell's Paradise," one of the flagship works of the web comic "Shonen Jump+," will soon be made into an anime! Under the watchful eye of their supervisor, the executioner, death row prisoners with various supernatural powers gathered from all over Japan seek the elixir of immortality in a bloody, life-risking battle on a remote island in the South Seas, in order to obtain the one and only "Official Pardon" that will pardon them of all their crimes and grant them acquittal. Just before the broadcast of this historical adventure action drama, we'd like to introduce all the main characters!
Gabimaru
One of the main characters of this work, Gabimaru is a ninja from Ishigakure Village with superhuman physical abilities. "Gabimaru" is the title given to the head ninja of Ishigakure Village, passed down through generations, and is not his real name. While he sometimes uses weapons, he excels in combat, making full use of his own physical strength. He is a killing machine, leaving mountains of corpses behind. His seemingly heartless and empty demeanor has earned him the nickname "Garabino Gabimaru," but in reality, he is an extremely devoted husband. He is extremely devoted to his wife, clinging to life only because he wants to reunite with her alive and live a normal life. He is characterized by his white hair and small stature, and uses ninjutsu that freely utilizes fire. He appears emptiness-filled and listless, but it's likely he's simply lazy and doesn't like to bother. He dislikes baths, as his combat-honed senses seem to melt away in the water. The women describe his attitude as "cat-like."
Yamada Asaemon Sagiri
The other protagonist of this work. Although she's a woman, unfortunately she's not in the heroine position lol. She's an executioner who teams up with Gamimaru to keep an eye on him. Born the daughter of the Yamada Asaemon family, whose business it is to carry out executions, she also embarked on the path of an executioner herself. She is ranked 12th in the Shiitto-ryu style of swordsmanship, a style passed down through the Yamada Asaemon family, but when she places her mind on the middle path, she displays strength that even Gamimaru takes seriously. When she first appears, she is a stubborn, inflexible, and hard-headed character, but as she interacts with Gamimaru and the other death row prisoners on the island, her attitude gradually changes and she begins to show a softer side. Judging from the back cover cut under the cover of volume 1 of the manga, her drawing skills appear to be poor. Kagami calls her "Sagirin."
Tamiya Gantetsusai
A muscular, hulking swordsman with the nicknames "Kenryu" and "Unrivaled in the Eight Provinces," he possesses a powerful swordsmanship befitting his physique. He has a violent and rather reckless personality, and is a muscle-brained man who has difficulty thinking about complex matters. He's a nice guy who makes no attempt to hide his perverted nature, even calling Maki "a woman with a nice ass" to her face lol. He hopes that his reputation as a swordsman will be passed down even after his death and become a legend. Shortly after arriving on the island, he was stung on the back of his left hand by a human-faced butterfly. Sensing something was wrong, he quickly cut off his own hand from the wrist down. Since then, he has been wearing a prosthetic arm with a claw attached, crafted by Shirazu.
Yamada Asaemon Shirazu
A small samurai with a distinctive bob hairstyle, he serves as Gen Tetsusai's supervisor. He is ranked ninth in the Shiitto-ryu school of swordsmanship. He has a mad scientist-like dissection and experimentation ethos, and is happy to dissect the strange creatures on the island. She wields two swords: one with a curved hooked tip and the other with a saw-like blade. She also carries dissection tools on her waist so she can perform dissections at any time. Gen Tetsusai calls her "Nantokaemon" and "Chibiemon." She is well-versed in medicine, pharmacology, and anatomy, and treats injured comrades and prepares medicines. She seems to be close friends with Senta, calling him "Sen-chan."
Yuzuriha
A kunoichi nicknamed "Kazuriha, the Descending Master." Though dressed in ninja attire, she is very revealing and is adept at seductive seduction, a kunoichi technique. She was the mastermind behind the infiltration of Sagiba Castle, and is skilled enough to single-handedly subdue all of the vassals. Her ninjutsu involves metabolizing drugs she takes, releasing a highly viscous liquid from her body, which she then uses to attack her opponents. She has a free and unrestrained personality, unconstrained by anything, and can be cunning and ruthless, but she is also moved by emotion when she acts. She is the type who would rather regret doing something than regret not doing it, and is a cheerful person who has a good sense of getting close to people. She had already met Gamimaru during the selection process, but when she meets him again after landing on the island, she proposes that they work together.
Yamada Asaemon Senta
He is Maki's supervisor and is ranked fifth in the Shiitto-ryu school. He is a kind-hearted, overweight man with glasses who is always sweating, but he is skilled in sword techniques that focus on thrusts, similar to fencing, and is extremely agile—a true "fat guy who can move." While he originally wanted to be an artist, he followed family tradition and became a disciple of the Yamada family. As a result, he began researching religion in search of relief from his life of killing people and earning a living, and he became knowledgeable in religion, folklore, and other subjects. Having constantly lied to himself, he admires Maki's free-spirited attitude. He seems to be on good terms with Shirazu.
Aza Chobei
Originally the son of a samurai serving in the Ako Domain (not the Ako Domain, as this is not historical fact). After a sword fight with the domain's lord led to the extinction of his family line, he descended into banditry. However, he used his natural ability to judge situations and adapt to take control of the situation, eventually rising to the head of a major band of thieves at a young age and earning the nickname "King of Thieves." Although he is extremely violent and highly skilled in combat, he cares deeply for his only family member, his younger brother, Touma. He is violent in speech and behavior, and his face is covered in scars, giving him a malevolent appearance.
Touma
Touma is Tokubei's younger brother, a genius who earned his Shiitō-ryū substitute license just one month after entering the Yamada family. Therefore, there is no hierarchy in the Shiitō-ryū style. To help his brother, he volunteered to be Tokubei's watchdog. His beautiful features, combined with his long hair, make him almost feminine. He is called a "woman's man" by Gen Tetsusai, and his swordsmanship is easily seen as superficial. He has strong objections to his brother and is an intense bro-con, reminiscent of Yuri from "SPY×FAMILY," which is also serialized in "Shonen Jump+."
Nurugai
He is the sole survivor of the Sanka, a "rebellious people" who rejected the shogunate's rule and lived freely in the mountains and fields. At first glance, he appears to be a boy, but he is actually a girl. After helping a samurai who had entered the mountains and bringing him into the village, he suffered the tragic massacre of the entire village. Feeling guilty, he nearly lost the will to live. However, he regained his will to live after being persuaded by Tenzo. He fell in love with Tenzo's masculinity and proposed to him. Incidentally, despite being a major character, Tenzo did not place in the top ten in the second popularity poll for the beach during the serialization, so he was unable to show off his swimsuit in the original double-page spread illustration. lol
Yamada Asaemon Tenza
He is Nurugai's supervisor and is ranked tenth in the Shiitto-ryu style. He is known for ending his sentences with "-ssu." He is an athletic, silly boy who is well aware of this and has difficulty thinking about complex issues. He lacks stamina, but seems confident in his sword speed. He was originally a ruffian who rampaged through the streets, but his talent for swordsmanship led him to become a disciple of the Yamada family, where he distinguished himself. Nurugai took a liking to him for his honest, straightforward, and positive personality, and invited him to become his son-in-law.
Igami Keiun
He is a former warrior monk who is fascinated by weapons. Like Benkei, he is nicknamed "Hyakuhongari" (hundred-hunted hunter) for stealing weapons from martial artists. He sews armor directly onto his own body to increase his defensive capabilities, a technique he calls "ikiyoroi" (living armor). This behavior is described as "perverted" by Gamimaru. Shortly after landing on the island, he surprise attacks Gamimaru in an attempt to reduce the number of competitors, but is counterattacked, and at Sagiri's command, Gamimaru, still tied up, stabs him all over with his own weapons, leaving him looking like a hedgehog.
Yamada Asaemon Kisho
He is a rank 11 student of the Shiitto-ryu school and serves as Keiun's watchdog. He doesn't seem to be the type to place much importance on rules, and is more of a casual person than a flexible one. After Igami Keiun is defeated by Gembamaru, he decapitates him and attempts to return alone. However, he is later discovered on the wrecked ship by Nurugai and the clerk, who are attempting to escape by boat, in a completely transformed state with flowers sprouting from his entire body.
Hourubou
A man sentenced to death, he possesses unusually long, soft, octopus-like limbs that he wraps around his opponents and attacks. He is nicknamed "Killing Prayer Buddha," but it is unknown whether he is actually a monk. His combat abilities appear to be high enough to make it onto the island's selection list. Before landing on the island, he attacked Tokubei on the ship, but was killed in retaliation, with his limbs torn off with his bare hands.
Yamada Asaemon Jikka
He is the supervisor of the Horyubou and is ranked third in the Shiitto-ryu school. He has a nonchalant demeanor and always seems completely unmotivated, and tries to slack off at every opportunity, but his sword skills are undeniable. Having pawned his waist sword for money to spend, he usually wears a bamboo sword at his waist, and even uses it for beheadings. However, his skilled technique is so impressive that no one around him even notices. After Horyubou is killed by Tokubei, she returns to Edo, but is sent back to the island.
Akaginu
Known as the "Man-Eating Courtesan," she is a murderer who specializes in men, killing and eating the men she seduces. The details of how she managed to survive the battle royale-style selection are unknown, but she may have surprisingly high fighting ability. She attempted to seduce her supervisor, Shien, but was executed for violating discipline.
Yamada Asaemon Shion
He oversees Akakinu and is ranked fourth in the Shiitto-ryu style. He is Tenzo's master, and Tenzo calls him "Sensei." Although born blind, he can sense the unique "vibrations" emitted by all things, much like the Marvel Comics superhero Daredevil, allowing him to "see" beyond the reach of ordinary people with open eyes. This is why he was able to immediately tell that Nurgai was a girl. The scar on his face was inflicted by his mother, a traveling performer, to enhance his performance. He has a unique sense of humor, often making jokes that play on the words "eye" and "see."
Moro Makiya
He is the leader of a new religious cult, also known as the "Korobi Botten Ren." He appears to have enough fighting ability to survive the selection of death row prisoners who land on the island, but the details of his abilities are unknown. After being seduced by Maki's charms, he is thoroughly used as a test subject to study the ecology of the island's creatures, ultimately resulting in his death. He is a character with almost no redeeming qualities in the story.
Yamada Asaemon Genji
He's a dark-skinned, muscular man with an eighth-rank rank in the Shiitto-ryu school. He was in charge of watching over Mogoro Makiya, but after Mogoro Makiya was killed by Maki, he now accompanies the Makiro-Senta pair. He seems to be "weak for women," and while he makes various excuses, it appears he fell for Makiro's flirtations. He's Sagiri's senior apprentice, and is a man who follows the samurai's way of life and values. In the comics, his speech bubbles are always depicted with rough lines, suggesting he likely has a raspy, hoarse voice.
Rokurouta
He's a giant, easily over three meters tall, nicknamed "Daidarabocchi" (the Great Giant of Bizen). His immense strength is intimidating, and his bare-handed attacks are virtually unstoppable and guaranteed instant death. He possesses the intelligence of a three-year-old child, and when hungry, he cries, screams, and rampages. Rumor has it that he can bite a bear alive, head and all, but the truth of this is unknown. However, the magistrate's office that captured him was at a loss as to what to do with him, and apparently exiled him to the mountains instead of imprisoning him.
Yamada Asaemon Eizen
He is the guardian of Rikurota, who holds the rank of first in the Shiitto-ryu school. He wears an eyepatch because he lost his left eye as a child. He volunteered to be Rikurota's guardian, who was considered the most dangerous of all the death row prisoners selected for the island, but he misjudged the hungry Rikurota's strength and was killed instantly.
Mei
Mei is a mysterious girl discovered by Gamimaru on the island. She is a young girl with pink hair. When she first appears, she does not speak, but as she travels with the group, she gradually begins to speak, albeit in broken sentences. When they first meet, she is afraid of Gamimaru and cries constantly, but after a certain incident, she becomes attached to him. Incidentally, she was also attached to Sagiri from the beginning lol. There are many mysteries surrounding her existence, such as the fact that she was able to throw Gamimaru away despite being a young girl. Gentetsusai calls her "Ojou" (young lady).
The Heavenly Immortals
These seven young men and women reign supreme over the island. They can freely change gender, from male to female and vice versa, and possess the incredible ability to regenerate even if a body part is lost. They are like boss characters in "Hell's Paradise," but their mysteries will be revealed as the story progresses.
