Leorio's reason for becoming a Hunter wasn't for personal money, but to earn money to provide free medical care to his friend, who he had killed, after accepting the fact that he could have survived if only he had been able to pay the medical expenses. Leorio is a clumsy, straightforward, and emotionally driven character who is incredibly appealing. Let's take a look at him.

Leorio's Profile

Age 19, birthday March 3rd, blood type O, height 193cm, weight 85kg. He wears sunglasses and a dark blue suit, giving him a slightly shady appearance, but among the many abnormal characters in Hunter x Hunter, he seems the most human.

His Nen type is emission, his specialty is folding weapons. He passed the Hunter Exam with strength and determination, and then went on to his dream of getting into medical school.

To be honest, I thought Leorio would be defeated by someone like Hisoka and drop out, so his passing was a surprise.

Leorio's first appearance left a very bad impression due to him reading adult books, and I thought he was the loser, responsible for the Hunter Exam's desires. I never expected him to become friends with Gon and the others and become involved in the story going forward.

Leorio's goal was to become a doctor who provides treatment free of charge.

Money!! Money can get you anything.

He lost a friend to illness because he couldn't pay for their surgery, but right at the start of the Hunter Exam, he only showed his money-grubber side.

In reality, he wants to become a doctor to save people like his friend, but perhaps out of embarrassment, he doesn't say it until he's truly opened up to them, which is typical of Leorio.

He's already started studying hard enough to provide first aid for Kiriko's exam, even more accurately than a doctor, showing how serious he is about his dream.

He's also skilled at mental care, and Senritsu recommended he become a teacher or doctor, saying he has a heartbeat that soothes people's hearts. It seems he's perfectly suited to the job.

Leorio's stamina is at its limit, and we learn his true purpose

After three hours of running, Leorio had reached 40km, but still no end in sight. At 60km, he put down his bag and stopped. Just when I thought, "Oh, Leorio's dropping out so quickly!"

I'm definitely going to become a Hunter!! Damn it!!

He showed his indomitable determination and started running again.
At the time, I thought that working hard just for money was a sign of his desire to get ahead, but this determination was all for the sake of the future patients he promised to cure.
When Kurapika suddenly started telling Leorio stories from the past as he was running at his limit, I thought he should leave him alone, but when I heard that he needed a huge amount of money to become a doctor and was working hard for that money, my heart warmed.

Watching it again, Leorio's honest heart pierces our hearts. It's hard not to look forward to the future of medicine that a man who strips off his suit and runs half-naked without caring about what others think can embody.

Knowing that he wouldn't be a man if he continued to take defeats, he challenged Hisoka to a one-on-one fight. It's a shame we might have seen more fight scenes without Gon's help, but this is one of Leorio's few fight scenes. Perhaps he was trying to let Kurapika and the others escape by acting as a decoy, and it's hard not to feel a sense of kindness.

The fact that Hisoka, who was thinning out the weaklings, recognized him may have been a sign that he highly values his future potential.

At this point, I noticed that Leorio was wearing perfume, and I thought to myself, with his sunglasses, perfume, and casual clothes being a suit, he must be an Italian dandy!

Well, unfortunately, Leorio doesn't seem like the type to be popular with the ladies, though.

The moment I lost hope in Leorio?

In a time-stakes test, you had to choose whether your opponent was male or female.
When faced with an opponent who clearly appeared female, you chose male. Your goal was to be able to determine if the opponent was female or not, and if it was male, you won without question.
Leorio begged to be eliminated.

I was quite disappointed to see him give up on the challenge and prioritize his own desires. It's very human, I suppose, but is that what it takes to want to be a doctor?! I thought.

However, looking at Leorio's face, which looked free of regret, I also felt like, alas, it was for the best.
Perhaps Leorio was trying to teach us that happiness comes in different forms for each person.
Of course not. He's just a perverted old man.

Leorio's caring side revealed during the Hunter Exam

Leorio went searching for his target, Ponzu, in a cave, but he fell into a trap set by the snake charmer Bourbon. He didn't want Gon or Kurapika to enter, so he warned them not to come in without considering the snake trap, and ended up getting poisoned by the snake himself.

In the end, Gon and Kurapika ended up entering the cave as well, so Leorio just got bitten, but it was also a moment where we saw Leorio's caring side as a friend.

During Gon's match with Hanzo, he couldn't just stand by and watch Gon get beaten one-sidedly, so he stepped in and tried to help Gon. It's nice to see Leorio's strong feelings for his friends.

Leorio's Superhuman Strength: Unparalleled

Following Killua, who failed the Hunter Exam and returned to his infamous home, the Zoldyck family, Leorio, along with Gon and Kurapika, arrived at the Zoldyck family's entrance and encountered the Gate of Tests, a gate whose weight changes depending on the individual's strength.
There are seven Gates of Trials, with Gate 1 weighing 2 tons on each side and 4 tons together.
After just two weeks of muscle training, Leorio managed to open Door 2, which weighs 4 tons on each side and 8 tons together.
At this point, he didn't know about the existence of Nen, so it was purely physical ability. Perhaps his potential is on par with Gon, Killua, or Kurapika. After all, he is someone Hisoka has recognized.
Leorio's simple way of thinking and actions made him a natural fit, and he was one of those fine monsters. He is a Hunter, after all. He wouldn't be able to get by in the future without that kind of ability.

Leorio might be a master negotiator.

He managed to get a new phone model that cost 400,000 yen for two phones down to the unbelievable price of 110,580 yen per phone. The audience reportedly erupted in applause, demonstrating the impressiveness of this negotiation. He said that when he was serious he got the same model for 82,000J, so the potential for his negotiation skills is immeasurable.
Still, it makes you wonder what kind of thing he does when he's negotiating seriously.

Leorio's talent recognized by Ging himself

Leorio begs Ging to let him see Gon, who was in a coma after his battle with Pitou, but Ging refuses. Leorio, having reached his limit, punches Ging with his newly learned Nen ability. It was clear at that moment that Leorio's feelings for his friends are stronger than anyone else's. I like how he acts on emotion rather than thinking.
Later, Ging says that Leorio has room to grow. I don't know if it was a compliment for punching Ging on that big stage, or if it was something to do with his abilities or personality, but Leorio=Paradiknight is quite something.

Leorio Summary

In stark contrast to his wicked claims that he wanted to become a Hunter for money, women, and cars, Leorio has become a loyal and caring Hunter, studying medicine at medical school. His goal is to become a doctor who provides medical care free of charge, which was his original goal.
The Nen abilities he has acquired can also be applied to medical care, so a future where his dreams come true may be just around the corner.
