Kurapika's reason for becoming a Hunter was to avenge his compatriots and retrieve their eyes. You might think that having friends would have weakened his desire for revenge, but that wasn't the case. After passing the Hunter Exam, his true life of revenge began. His preference for acting alone may be due to his view of his companions as a nuisance, or perhaps because he doesn't want to involve them. By focusing on revenge and his companions, we can get a better understanding of the person Kurapika is. Let's introduce this Kurapika.
Kurapika's Profile
Age 17, birthday April 4th, blood type AB, from the Luxo region, a survivor of the Kurta clan, which was wiped out by the Phantom Troupe, a band of thieves. His gender remains a mystery. Some say he's a man or a woman, but because he frequently uses the first-person pronoun "ore," I thought there was a good chance he was a man. However, I previously saw the author, Togashi-sensei, comment that he had become a character whose identity was unclear, so at present it's difficult to say either way.
His Nen type is Materialization, his specialty weapons are two wooden swords and chains, and he passed the Hunter Exam with his natural intelligence and physical ability.
When he activates his Scarlet Eyes, his type changes to Specialty, greatly increasing his combat ability. In particular, when he was facing the Phantom Troupe, the enemy of his comrades, he showed such strength that it was hard to believe he had only recently learned Nen, overwhelming even Uvogin, a member of the Troupe.
Kurapika became a Hunter to protect his comrades, the Scarlet Eyes, and seek revenge against the Phantom Troupe.
The Kurta, a minority tribe living quietly in the Luxo region, were hunted down by bandits known as the Phantom Troupe, who were targeted by their glowing scarlet eyes. Kurapika is the last survivor of the Kurta.
When a Kurta's eyes become emotional, they turn crimson red, and if they die in that state, their eye color remains. This could be achieved through brutal methods such as torture, forcibly manipulating their emotions, and then harvesting their eyes, or by killing their comrades to incite their rage. Kurapika believes that the Phantom Troupe took them in one of these ways.
The Kurta's eyes are so highly sought after in the underworld that they are considered one of the seven most beautiful colors in the world and are traded for 1 billion jenny, and are scattered among collectors around the world. In order to find them, and to take revenge on the Phantom Troupe who wiped out his comrades, Kurapika became a Hunter.
According to the Hunter website, the difficulty level of obtaining the Scarlet Eyes is A, and the Phantom Troupe's danger level is also A, so it's clear that Kurapika's journey will be difficult.
By the way, Greed Island, which Gon and Killua were desperately trying to obtain in Yorkshin, has a difficulty level of G, so you can see how difficult it is.
In that sense, the Scarlet Eyes, which sold for 1 billion yen at auction, were a real bargain.
That is, if the eyes can be protected from thieves who seek them out and vengeful seekers like Kurapika. Perhaps it is precisely because of these dangers that they are so difficult to obtain.
Kurapika's Nen is a omnipotent power that uses five chains!
Kurapika fights using five chains, each with a different function. I think this is very Kurapika-like. It's like he can handle everything on his own when a particular level of skill is required, without relying on anyone.
Furthermore, while Kurapika is normally a Materialization type, when he activates his Scarlet Eyes he becomes a Special Type, a skill known as Emperor Time, which greatly increases his abilities and allows him to use 100% of all his abilities.
Holy Chain, the Healing Thumb Chain
It can heal injured areas, and if it's during Absolute Time, it can completely heal even a minor fracture in just a few seconds.
It's interesting to wonder which is more powerful: Archangel's Breath or Kurapika's Holy Chain. Still, if it can heal broken bones in a matter of seconds, it could also be used for torture, inflicting pain while healing, and one can't help but feel Kurapika's darkness.
Steel Chain, the Stealing Chain of the Index Finger
By stabbing an opponent with the syringe at the end of the chain, you can receive Nen abilities.
While the direct offensive power is not particularly strong, you can use the syringe to examine the abilities you have received and transfer them.
The image is of him being able to use the abilities of others, like Chrollo of the Phantom Troupe, so in that sense the abilities may be similar. Although there's a big difference between stealing and borrowing.
It can also be used in applications such as analyzing abilities and planning strategies while fighting, so it's a very versatile ability.
Chain Jail, the Binding Middle Finger Chain
This ability is exclusive to the Phantom Troupe, strengthened by the restriction that it should not be used on anyone other than the Troupe, and the oath that anyone who uses it on anyone other than the Troupe will end their own life.
A restrained Troupe member is forced into a state of Zetsu, and the only way to destroy them is with their own body. It seems that cutting the chains would be difficult unless one conceals a weapon imbued with spirits by a third party and seizes it. If simply touching it puts one in a state of Zetsu, then it would be a powerful, virtually indestructible ability.
The chain of the guiding ring finger, the dowsing chain
Can detect lies and find lost items.
While this ability is limited to those in direct contact, during Absolute Time, it can detect lies even if the person has met the person before.
This ability is likely a tool for finding the Scarlet Eyes. Kurapika's powers are rational and efficient.
The Chain of Judgment, the Disciplining Little Finger
By stabbing a dagger chain into the target's heart, he can force them to make a vow. If the target breaks the oath, the chain will be pierced through their heart, resulting in death. This ability cannot be broken unless Kurapika removes it.
An extremely heavy oath: absolute time!
In exchange for being able to use all of their powers at 100%, their lifespan is reduced by one hour for each second of activation.
Since Kurapika's chain ability relies on absolute time, it is likely that his lifespan is rapidly decreasing. This ability can be seen as a way to gather the eyes of his compatriots and exact revenge on them.
He would likely be willing to sacrifice his own life for the sake of revenge.
His selfless, self-sacrificing behavior is very Kurapika-like, but it's also sad. It doesn't seem like he has the slightest thought about living a peaceful life after achieving his revenge.
Kurapika's Revenge on the Phantom Troupe
In a one-on-one battle with Uvogin, a member of the Phantom Troupe, Kurapika restrained Uvogin with Chain Jail, successfully sealed Uvogin's Nen, and finished him off with the Judgment Chain.
Kurapika, testing the level of his own fighting power while conducting experimental battles with the Troupe, looked like a seasoned Nen user. And he won in a landslide victory.
He was also able to stab Pakunoda and Chrollo with Judgment Chains. Pakunoda subsequently died and Chrollo released his Nen, but Kurapika remained calm and unfazed, believing that this was to be expected.
When the commander was captured, Gon and Killua were being held hostage by the enemy, but Gon and Killua's lives were more important to him than Chrollo, the commander of the Troupe and the enemy of his comrades. He immediately agreed to surrender Chrollo. Kurapika's charm and weakness lie in the fact that, while he appears ruthless and rational, he is kind to his friends.
It was a moment when friendship triumphed over revenge.
Kurapika Summary
Kurapika chose to become a Blacklist Hunter in pursuit of revenge. Unwavering in his goal, he plunged into the underworld to gain information on the Eye and seek revenge against the Brigade. He gained the power to exact revenge.
Although he seems to prefer acting alone, Gon, Killua, and Leorio are extremely worried about him. They are able to stop him from going out of control. With such good friends, perhaps one day Kurapika will be able to break free from the cat-and-mouse game of revenge.
