Have you heard of the currently popular fantasy work "Drifting Dragons"? It's actually a popular work that ranked 14th in "This Manga is Amazing! 2018." It's written by Taikaku Kuwabara. It quickly became a hot topic for its Ghibli-esque worldview and depictions of delicious food. An anime adaptation is also scheduled for 2020. We're all excited to see what happens next. In this article, we'll introduce the dishes featuring dragons (orochi) that appear in "Drifting Dragons." Dragons (orochi) play a very important role in this worldview. The story revolves around dragons (orochi). And best of all, the dishes made with dragons (orochi) look absolutely delicious. Let's take a look!

Is "Drifting Dragons" a food-teasing manga?! The food looks absolutely delicious!

All the dishes in "Drifting Dragons" look so delicious that some have dubbed it a "food-terrorizing manga." While the idea of eating dragons is quite novel, this world revolves around dragons.

The economy runs on dragons

Dragon

Dragons in this world are often referred to as "treasure troves." After capturing a dragon, the meat is eaten and the oil is extracted to be used in processed foods. Capturing a single dragon can bring in a considerable amount of money. In fact, in this world, there is even a saying that "one dragon brings seven prosperous markets." You can see that it can fetch a lot of money! In addition to dragon meat and oil, the bones and tendons can be used to make a variety of materials and crafts. And depending on the species, the internal organs can even be used as ingredients for medicine. It makes sense that one dragon can fetch a lot of money! However, on the other hand, the losses if you are unable to capture one are also great. Just operating a dragon-hunting ship costs a lot of money. Capturing and selling a single dragon involves a lot of money.

The main ingredient is "Orochi" (dragon)!

Mika

So, dragons are the main ingredient in every dish that appears in this manga! Dragons are originally mythical creatures, so it's hard to imagine capturing and eating them. However, the story features a variety of dishes, including dragon steak and dragon panini. There are even recipes written on the blank pages, showing the author's attention to detail. The characters also eat the dishes with such gusto (especially Mika, who has a weakness for dragons), that reading the manga will make you hungry too. Are you curious to know what kind of dishes they are? Perhaps the beautiful depictions of delicious food are also why it's said to resemble the world of Ghibli.

[Airborne Dragons] Everything Looks Delicious! Introducing the Dishes Featured

Now, finally, we'll introduce recipes using dragons! The story basically follows the same pattern: dragon appears → capture → cook. Therefore, at the end, there's always a delicious dish introduced. I'm already excited to see what kind of dish will appear. If you're interested in a dish, try making it using substitute ingredients.

Menu 1☆ Dragon's Onomichi Steak Sandwich

Dragon's Steak

This steak looks so delicious! Even Takita couldn't help but drool over it. It's actually the first dish to appear in the story. The ingredients are dragon tail, dragon skin fat, rock salt, wine vodka, pepper, and two slices of bread. Grill the meat thoroughly on a hot plate, sprinkling salt and pepper on both sides to season. Then, add dragon fat to the hot plate and brown it well. After adding a splash of wine vodka to evaporate the alcohol, slice the cooked meat and place it between slices of bread that has been browned on one side. It's a simple yet delicious dish! By the way, letting the cooked meat rest in a warm place for 3-5 minutes will make it even juicier. This dish is so juicy, it's highly recommended for meat lovers.

Menu 2☆ Devil-Style Miniature Dragon

Dish

This dish looked absolutely delicious! I remember Mika and Takita's faces beaming. The skin was crispy and fragrant, and the meat was tender and tender. The ingredients required are one miniature dragonfly, olive oil, salt, pepper, and a moderate amount of lemon. Three rosemary leaves, half a teaspoon of cayenne pepper, and one garlic clove. First, remove the dragon's head and feathers, then remove the internal organs. Then, wipe the surface of the dragon meat dry. Next, place the minced garlic, olive oil, lemon juice, cayenne pepper, salt, pepper, and rosemary in a bowl. Mix well and coat the dragon meat completely in the marinade, then let it marinate for 30 minutes to an hour. Then, heat a frying pan with oil and fry the skin-side down over medium heat. Once golden brown, flip the meat over and cook it in the same way. Cook it again using the garlic and rosemary from the marinade until crispy, and it's done! It's delicious. It also looks fancy, so it might be better suited to a party.

Menu 3 ☆ Dragon Preserved Terrine

Terrine

Next up, what a treat! Terrine! What a fancy dish! The ingredients are dragon liver, potato, pickled cabbage, salt, pepper, garlic, and dragon fat. First, rub the salt, pepper, and minced garlic into the dragon liver. Then, place the dragon fat and liver in a deep pot and heat at 80°C or higher for 1.5 to 2 hours to create the confit. Then, mash the potato and mix well with salt, pepper, and a little of the fat from the liver confit. Line the inside of the mold with pickled cabbage, then fill it with mashed potatoes and slices of confit, in that order. Be careful not to trap any air in the process! Then fold any pickled cabbage that overflows from the mold inward and press it down firmly. Slide a knife between the mold and the terrine, remove it from the mold, and it's done. It looks so delicious, doesn't it? By the way, this dish was made by Vanny in the original story. Mika says it's "rich, mellow, and refreshing all in one." It seems to be very delicious. It looks beautiful, too! It goes well with alcohol. I thought this was a menu that was perfect for Vanny, who loves and can tolerate alcohol.
