This is a battle manga serialized in Weekly Shonen Jump from issue 11 of 2016 to issue 24 of 2020, and the author is Koyoharu Gotouge. At first glance, his name makes him seem like a man, but Gotouge is actually a woman.
The TV anime aired from April to September 2019, and the sequel, the "Mugen Train Arc", is scheduled to be released as a movie on October 16, 2020.
The protagonist, Tanjiro Kamado, lives peacefully with his family deep in the mountains, but when he returns home from town, he finds a gruesome scene.
His family has been brutally murdered by demons, and Tanjiro descends the mountain with his sister Nezuko, who is barely alive.
However, on the way, Nezuko is transformed into a demon. Tanjiro is saved by Giyu Tomioka, a member of the Demon Slayer Corps, and sets out on a journey to turn Nezuko back into a human.
The first season of the anime covers up to the middle of volume 7 of the manga, and the movie version "Mugen Train Arc" continues from there to volume 8.
This time, I would like to introduce Enmu, who fights on the Infinite Dream Train, which is also the origin of the name "Mugen Train Arc".
Enmu, the only surviving Lower Rank demon
After Rui, the Lower Rank Five, is defeated, Muzan Kibutsuji is astonished at the weakness of the Lower Rank demons. Muzan's subordinates who receive a large share of his blood are called the Twelve Kizuki, which are divided into six upper ranks and six lower ranks. The upper ranks have not changed for nearly a hundred years, and it is always the upper ranks that have defeated the Demon Slayer Corps' pillars. Muzan fears the Demon Slayer Corps and tries to dismantle the lower ranks, who are of no use to him. The demons who ran away or talked back to Muzan were killed, and Enmu was the only lower rank demon left. Muzan asks what he has to say in the end. Enmu expresses his gratitude to Muzan. Enmu loves the misfortune and suffering of others, and is able to see the other lower rank demons suffer and die, and even be killed by Muzan himself. He tells Muzan that there is no greater happiness than this. Enmu thought he would be killed, but unlike the other demons, Muzan shared a large amount of his blood with Enmu, who was insane. Enmu, who was given so much blood, could have died from the excessive blood, but he adapted well and gained even more power. Thus, Enmu is ordered by Muzan to kill Tanjiro, the demon hunter pillar and the one wearing the Hanafuda-like earrings.
Upper and Lower Moon Demons
The strength of the Twelve Kizuki is represented by numbers. Upper Moon One is the strongest and Lower Moon Six is the weakest. Also, the lower rank demons only have numbers carved into one eye, so they are looked down upon by the upper rank demons. Rui, who Tanjiro defeated, is the lower rank Five, so second from the bottom. Considering that Tomioka Giyuu killed him in an instant, there must be a wall between the upper ranks and the lower ranks that cannot be overcome.
A Well-Prepared Enmu
Enmu's blood demon art is a technique that puts the opponent to sleep and manipulates the dream. The conductor sets up the sleep technique by punching the ticket, and sends the children into the dream of Tanjiro and the others who have fallen asleep. People whose "spiritual core" is destroyed in the dream become invalids, so the intention was to defeat him after that. Enmu is very cowardly and cunning, using the conductor and children as disposable pawns while staying in a safe place, but in a way it can also be said to be very demon-like. Enmu believes that the driving force of humans is the heart, and seems to think that by destroying the mind from the dream, he can easily defeat any strong demon hunter.
Thorough caution
Those who fall asleep with Enmu's magic cannot move their bodies. Since they cannot move their bodies, it seems like it would be easy to kill them, but Enmu was thorough. Enmu, who believes that sensitive demon hunters may be able to sense the murderous intent and break the technique, sends the children into a dream. As expected, Rengoku instinctively senses the danger and moves his body, and Tanjiro wakes up from the dream on his own. If he hadn't been so cautious, Enmu might have been killed more easily.
Enmu confronts Tanjiro
Tanjiro wakes up from his dream and encounters Enmu on the train. Enmu's dreams are happy dreams and convenient dreams for the person himself, and normally he would want to stay in the dream. However, Tanjiro quickly realizes that it is a dream, and even sees through the awakening condition of suicide. Enmu is surprised by Tanjiro, and when he sees his earrings, he realizes that he is his target. Muzan is obsessed with Tanjiro, so if he kills him, he will be able to get more blood from Muzan than ever before. If he becomes strong, he will challenge an Upper Rank demon to a bloody battle, and if he wins, he will become an Upper Rank demon. Enmu attacks Tanjiro while thinking of his own success story.
The Fearsome Tanjiro
Enmu casts a sleep spell on Tanjiro as he charges at him, but Tanjiro doesn't stop. Enmu is upset that the spell doesn't work, but it did. As soon as Tanjiro falls under the spell, he instantly commits suicide and returns to the real world. It's not easy to decapitate yourself, even in a dream. He does it over and over again, so it's no wonder Enmu is surprised. Tanjiro still has a long way to go when it comes to swordsmanship, but his mental strength is quite impressive.
Enmu merges with the train
Enmu's neck was cut by Tanjiro, but he wasn't dead. He merged with the train, and the entire train became Enmu's main body.
Enmu won't die unless his neck, which is somewhere on the train, is cut. Enmu takes 200 passengers hostage and disappears into the train. Even though he's a lower-ranking demon, he's one of the Twelve Moon Demons, so he's not going to be easy to deal with.
Enmu was extremely cautious
Enmu's aim from the beginning was to fuse with the train and capture the 200 passengers as hostages and food.
The reason he used the conductor to put Tanjiro and the others to sleep, and the reason he used the children to try to destroy the "spirit core" were all to buy time for this purpose!! ! It's actually impressive how thorough he is.
Enmu's neck fused with the train
Tanjiro and Inosuke, who discovered Enmu's neck in the front car, use their techniques to cut it. However, the flesh regenerates quickly and the attack does not reach the bone.
Furthermore, Tanjiro has been put to sleep many times by the Blood Demon Art, and is no longer able to distinguish between reality and dreams. Tanjiro almost cuts off his own neck in the real world, but is saved by Inosuke's voice.
Because Inosuke is wearing the boar skin, it is difficult to make eye contact and the spell does not work on him. Enmu would never have imagined that something like that would prevent the spell from working on him.
Enmu's neck has been chopped off
Enmu's flesh is torn apart by Inosuke's Beast Breathing Fourth Form "Slice" and his neck is cut by Tanjiro's Hinokami Kagura "Hekira no Ten". Enmu writhes and rolls over while letting out a tremendous death cry.
Because his neck has been cut, he cannot regenerate and meets a sad end.
Enmu's miserable death
Enmu dies, integrating with the train and taking on an ugly form. Despite his careful preparations, he dies without being able to eat any of the 200 passengers. He wasn't using his full power. It wasn't supposed to be like this. Rengoku, Zenitsu, Nezuko, Tanjiro, and Inosuke all harbor resentment towards them, but their bodies are falling apart. The Upper Rank demons are burying the Demon Slayer Corps' pillars, but he is killed by the Demon Slayer Corps, who is not even a pillar. Even with the power he gained after overcoming death and receiving a large amount of blood from Muzan, he resents his own power, which is far from that of an Upper Rank demon. Enmu has given Tanjiro and his friends many nightmares, but in the end he dies realizing that he was having the worst nightmare of all.
A Summary of the Sleeping Demon Enmu, Who Attacks Tanjiro and His Friends
What did you think?
Enmu is a bit hateful for being cowardly and cruel, but when you see his final moment of death, you start to feel sorry for him... Enmu has caused Tanjiro and his friends plenty of trouble, but his power is no match for the upper-rank demons...
Just how strong will the upper-rank demons that Tanjiro and his friends will be fighting from now on? And how strong will Muzan Kibutsuji be, who commands them? I'm curious to see how things will develop from here! !
In the movie version, the battle with Enmu is one of the main ones, so it will be interesting to see how it is portrayed! !
