Commander Erwin succeeded in dramatically reducing casualties and significantly increasing the survival rate by devising a strategy called "long-distance reconnaissance formation" that placed emphasis on how to avoid encountering Titans. The strategy was for soldiers to deploy in a semicircle in front, and if they found a Titan, they would fire a smoke signal, and Commander Erwin would decide the overall course of action.
