Whenever I introduce an anime, I always do a "ranking of famous quotes"! When you watch an anime, there are many famous quotes that stay with you even after you've finished watching. Of course, "Ascendance of a Bookworm" also features many famous quotes, from tear-jerking ones to funny ones, and even ones that are helpful. So this time, I'll be introducing all of those quotes in a ranking format! Although it's a personal ranking, I'll be introducing them from 1st to 10th place!
Tenth Place: The Word Myne Spoke Immediately After Waking Up in Another World
My tenth place pick is the word Urano uttered immediately at the beginning of the story, when she awakens as Myne and begins searching for the book. Although she had collapsed with a fever since waking up, Myne wanders around looking for the book. When she finds that the book is not in her room, she next attempts to explore the room behind the door. However, the doorknob was too high for Myne to reach... She muttered, "It's for the book, so I guess it can't be helped..." and pulled her futon to the door, using it as a step to open it. Incidentally, the floor was so dusty that her feet got dirty in no time. The futon was probably in a terrible state.
Ninth Place: Myne's Words That Made Lutz Blush
Ninth place goes to Myne's words that made Lutz blush. When they go out, Myne sits down and is unable to move, so Lutz is the first to offer to carry her. However, Lutz's brother Ralph is more used to carrying people, so he ends up carrying Myne instead, and Lutz ends up carrying the luggage instead. Seeing Lutz like that, Myne says, "Lutz, thank you for being the first one to worry about me." However, seeing that he still looks a little depressed, Myne smiles and says the final words to Lutz: "You're so kind, Lutz. Thank you." With these words, Lutz blushes and looks away. This is a rare scene where Lutz is embarrassed.
Eighth Place: A Jealous Word Spoken by Gunther, Who Loves His Daughter
In eighth place is this rather amusing quote. "I love you, Otto!" Myne's shocking words made Gunther jealous and upset. Of course, when Myne says "I love you," she's only saying it because Otto taught her how to read and gave her a slate pencil; it's not about any romantic involvement. Still jealous, Gunther muttered, "Otto's already married," as he led Myne to the gate where Otto was. Even Myne was taken aback (lol). She couldn't help but scream, "That's so annoying!" Needless to say, she even took out her frustration on Otto afterward.
Seventh Place: Myne couldn't help but smile as Tuli thanked her...
Myne's spontaneous response was the reason I chose seventh place! On the day of Tuuli's seventh birthday and baptism, Myne celebrated by giving her a special soup with star-shaped ingredients at dinner. Tuuli, delighted with the soup and saying, "I'm so happy today," thanked Myne for the hair ornament she made for her baptism. Her gentle smile made Myne blush, her lovestruck demeanor rivaling even Gunther's (lol). She couldn't help but mutter to herself, "My Tuuli is a real angel!"
Number 6: She's scary when she's angry. A Word from Myne's Out-of-Control
Our sixth place pick is a line from Myne that had a bigger impact than just being a famous quote. During a meeting with the temple head, Myne was told that her family would be executed, and her magical powers went out of control. The rampaging power was so powerful that simply approaching the temple head could take someone's life. The temple head urged her to stay away, and the high priest desperately tried to stop her. Despite desperate attempts to persuade her, Myne replied, "If you're trying to kill someone, you must be prepared to be killed as well," and attempted to kill the temple head. In the end, the head priest convinced him that his family would also be charged with murdering the nobles, and his anger subsided, but he collapsed, foaming at the mouth.
Fifth Place: Gunther's Words to Myne After Reincarnation
For fifth place, I chose the words he said to Myne after seeing Urano reincarnated into her and becoming healthier with each passing day. On this day, Myne made a paru cake, which Gunther, who had just returned from work, ate and praised. At that moment, Tuuli and Eva wondered how strange it was that Myne was able to do things by herself, like applying simple baby shampoo and making baskets, without anyone teaching her. However, Gunther interrupted them, saying "It's fine, even if it's strange," and added, "I'm just happy that you're healthy and moving around now." Up until then, she had been in a situation where it wouldn't have been strange for her to die at any time, so Gunther must have been truly happy just to see Myne healthy and doing well. Hearing his words, Tuuli and Eva agreed, and the story ended.
Fourth Place: The Line Myne Spoke When She Decided to Make a Book
Fourth place goes to the line Myne blurted out when she decided to make a book. After a day spent outside on Eva's back, Myne wondered if there were no bookstores in this world. She wondered how she could possibly read a book without bookstores, and agonized over this idea alone at dinner. How on earth could she possibly read a book? After much thought, she finally decided, "I have no choice but to make one myself!" Myne's family laughed at this sudden remark, asking, "What are you making?", but in that moment, she resolved to do whatever it took! "I'll do whatever it takes! I'll get the book! I'm not going to give up!"
Third Place: Lutz's Words to Myne After Learning Her True Identity
My third place pick is the final words Lutz said to Myne when he confronted her about her true identity. As Lutz worked with Myne, he began to suspect that she might not be the "real Myne," and decided to confront her once the paper was finished. Then, on that fateful day, he was told that Myne had already died and that the Myne he now knew was from another world. He became distraught and angrily demanded that Myne be returned, but after learning about Myne's circumstances, he gradually regained his composure. When Myne asked if it was okay for her fake self to disappear, Lutz lightly flicked her on the forehead and told the current Myne, who he had spent the past year with, "You're fine as my Myne." This scene is seriously cool, both in its lines and gestures, so don't miss it!
Second Place: Benno's Merchant's Guide
Second place goes to a typical merchant quote from Benno. When selling Myne's hair ornament to the guild leader, Benno negotiated for four small silver coins. Myne and Lutz were surprised to hear that four small silver coins for a hair ornament was a steep price. When Myne pointed out that this was a bit much, Benno showed no remorse and smiled, saying, "You should take as much money as you can when and where you can." Incidentally, this quote is also said by the guild leader's granddaughter, Frieda, so it seems like a natural thing for a merchant.
Number 1: A Word Günther Spoke During the Family Meeting
The top-ranked quote from "Ascendance of a Bookworm" is a line Günther said during the family meeting. That day, Myne held a family meeting to discuss her "devouring" condition, and explained everything that had happened to her family, including the fact that her "devouring" condition was incurable. Eva and Tuuli could not hide their shock at this sudden confession. Amidst all this, only Gunther remains calm and continues the conversation, saying he wants to hear what happens next. Myne tries to hide the fact that she only has a year left to live, but Gunther sees through everything and asks about the relapse. He has seen through her and when Myne asks, "How did you know...?" Gunther replies, "I know, because I'm your father." It's no exaggeration to say that this scene and line are the highlight of this film, which is filled with family love, so I highly recommend you watch it.
