The long-awaited second season of the anime "Re:ZERO − Starting Life in Another World" has finally been announced! This fantasy alternate world story has become a huge hit. A new episode depicting the story of Emilia and Puck's first meeting is scheduled for theatrical release in the fall of 2019! This article delves into the Roswaal family, home to Emilia, the heroine of Re:ZERO.

What is the Roswaal family?

The Roswaal family refers to the people who live in the mansion of Roswaal L. Mathers, Margrave of the Kingdom of Lugnica. Their owner, Roswaal, is a unique man who wears eccentric clothing and clown makeup. As befits the lord of the Mathers territory, the mansion where Roswaal lives is truly magnificent! Our protagonist, Subaru, also becomes a servant there as a token of gratitude for saving Emilia.

Lord Roswaal L. Mathers

Roswaal L. Mathers, the owner of the Roswaal Mansion, is treated as an eccentric, especially since he recommended Emilia, a silver-haired half-elf that everyone dislikes, as a candidate for king. However, he also has a kind side, as seen in his invitation to the displaced Rem and Ram, as well as Emilia, into his home. But what is his true purpose? In fact, he has a dark side, but we'll cover that in more detail in another article.

An entire army all by himself? Roswaal's strength!

Roswaal is the "Court's Leading Magician," a magician with some of the most powerful magical abilities in the kingdom. He's so powerful that he's said to be as powerful as an entire army! Indeed, in the anime, he instantly incinerated the hordes of magical beasts that Rem and Ram struggled to the point of exhaustion.

The secret to his strength is that he's been blessed with the "Magical Protection," which gives him aptitude for all six magical elements: fire, water, earth, wind, light, and darkness!

Guardian of the Forbidden Library? Beatrice

Beatrice is the spirit who manages the Forbidden Library at Roswaal Mansion. She has a distinctive way of speaking, adding "~kashira" to the end of her sentences. She's a cute little girl with blonde hair in vertical curls, frilly clothes, and butterfly-like eyes. Not only is her speech distinctive, but her appearance is, too!

Although she enters the hidden room and dislikes Subaru's familiarity, her kind-hearted nature helps him many times.

400 years of loneliness...

In fact, Beatrice is an artificial spirit created by the Greedy Witch Echidna, and has a long relationship with Roswaal and Puck. Due to a certain contract, she has spent 400 years in solitude in the Forbidden Archives. In the novel, she makes a new contract with Subaru and leaves the Archives.

She calls Puck "Nii-cha" and seems to be very close to him. I will be sharing more about Beatrice's past, along with Roswaal's, in a separate article!

Cute but Strong! Rem and Ram

Scared Rem and Ram

Rem and Ram are maids in the Roswaal household. They're incredibly popular thanks to their cute looks, adorable maid outfits, and, above all, their wonderful personalities! In fact, Rem and Ram are demon twins, and after their home village was attacked by the Witch's Cult, they lost their home... They came to Roswaal's rescue, and now they have absolute trust and loyalty.

Ram, the maid who hates housework!

She is the twin sister of Subaru, and in fact possesses such powerful magical powers that she is known as a "child prodigy" among the demons. However, her horn was broken during an attack on the village, and she is now weaker than Rem. Ram has a sharp tongue and constantly insults Subaru, calling him "Balus," but Rem says, "My sister is too kind." And despite being a maid, she's not good at housework.

The devilishly cute maid Rem!

Rem looks happy as Subaru holds her hand

Rem's twin sister. She considers herself a failure among the demons and harbors an inferiority complex toward Ram. At first, she doubts Subaru enough to kill him, believing him to be connected to the witches. However, after seeing him sacrifice himself to protect the Roswaal family, she begins to trust him. Her feelings then turn to love.

In the anime, she spends more time with Subaru than the heroine Emilia, becoming something of a "wife." In fact, there are many Rem fans out there!

A bottomless kind-hearted person! Emilia

Emilia and Puck

Emilia is a silver-haired half-elf, just like the hated "Witch of Envy, Satella" in this world. Emilia also has no parents or other relatives and is living at Roswaal's mansion. And it's Roswaal who recommends Emilia, a candidate for king!

After Subaru is reincarnated in another world, Emilia immediately rescues him. From then on, Subaru falls in love with her, and for her sake, he repeatedly "Returns by Death" to start over.

Is her true form terrifying? Spirit Puck

Puck is a spirit who has made a contract with Emilia. His appearance is like a very cute cat. Even Subaru, who claims to love furry things, approves of how soft it feels to the touch! However, if Emilia dies, he will transform into a large, terrifying form and seek to take the lives of all people in order to destroy the world. In fact, the author has said that his strength is enough to defeat the White Whale.

Natsuki Subaru, the Servant from Another World

A cocky Subaru

Subaru joined the Roswaal family as a reward for saving Emilia, hoping to become a servant. At first, he faced hardships, including suspicion due to the "Witch's Scent" and even being killed by Rem. However, Subaru's feelings for Emilia and the Roswaal family ultimately paid off. Considering how many times Subaru "returned to death" before gaining their trust, his tenacity is truly impressive.

Summary of the Roswaal Family

Although I said "Roswaal family," in reality, Roswaal was the only "human" in the family. Since Roswaal doesn't seem like an ordinary human, perhaps the only one who really stands out is Subaru, who joined later... The Roswaal family is quite unique, but each of them considers the Roswaal mansion their "home," and they all have a strong desire to protect it. I'll be revealing spoilers about Roswaal, the most mysterious character, in a separate article, so stay tuned!
