Ishida Sui's debut work. Set in modern Tokyo, the story revolves around ghouls, creatures who have the appearance of humans but survive by eating human flesh. The concept is dark fantasy, but there are also elements of science fantasy.

Type: Scales of kagune (half-kagune). Compared to Kaneki (or Rize), his kagune stands up all over. There are two of them. When he transforms into a half-kagune, his upper body and right arm are wrapped in layers of muscle-like kagune. To put it simply, his swollen upper body resembles the Tyrant from Resident Evil, and his face resembles Gore Magara.

In this state, the number of kagune is reduced to one on his right arm, but his attack power and regeneration ability are further increased, so there is no hindrance in fighting. In the anime version, perhaps to show the intensity of their half-kakushi blood, Kaneki's kagune is a bright red, while Yamori's kagune in his half-kakushi state is a murky dark red.

Who is Omori Yakumo (Yamori) anyway?

One of the executives of the ghoul group "Aogiri Tree". His kagune is rinkaku. He was originally from Ward 13 and was nicknamed Jason. He is called Yamori by those around him. He is a half-kagune with high combat abilities and secretly practices cannibalism. As a half-kagune, his kagune covers his entire right arm and head.

Cruel personality

A genuine sadist, he inflicts pain on others every day for pleasure, and his hobby is torture, killing people for "fun" rather than "food". However, he wasn't always like this, and his current personality was formed by the death of his mother and the torture by the investigators. In fact, when he is cornered, he talks to himself weakly, saying "I" and "Is it...?", so it is thought that he was originally a quiet person.

Surprising? A habit with a long history!

He has a habit of bending his index finger and pressing it with his thumb to make a popping sound, but this is not Yamori's habit, but originally the habit of the investigator who tortured him. Later, Kaneki inherited the habit.

Big Brother Gecko

Although he has an ugly personality, he is close to Nico and Naki, and is considerate of Naki. That's why Naki calls him "God Brother" and loves him.

The person who transformed the main character, Kaneki Ken!

A true sadist, he is a torture maniac who pursues the pleasure of inflicting pain on others every day. This is because, before he was called Jason, he was captured and sent to a ghoul storage facility, but was not killed because he had information about other wards, and was relentlessly tortured by an investigator with an abnormal sexual fetish. Originally his hair was black, but it turned white at this time.

Yamori's Theory

And because of this, he believes that "all disadvantages in this world are due to the person's lack of ability," as the investigator had said. He is interested in Kaneki, a half-ghoul, and after Aogiri Tree captures him, he captures Kaneki, who tries to escape with the anti-Aogiri, and tortures him.

Clash! Yamori VS Kaneki

Battle scene between Yamori and Kaneki

He inflicts terrible suffering on Kaneki, and after noticing his extraordinary regenerative powers, he repeatedly tortures him in a vicious manner, and finally tries to eat him, but Kaneki awakens as a ghoul and counterattacks, resulting in a battle. He releases the power of the half-kakumono, and although he fights on equal terms in the beginning with his sturdiness and the weight of his blows, he is overwhelmed by Juuzou's analytical ability and the number of moves he uses, and is completely defeated. The fast-paced battle scenes in the anime version are a must-see.

It's over! If you hit me, I'll hit you back...

This time he is tortured and two of his kakuhou are eaten. Kaneki, not wanting to take responsibility for Yamori's life, turns into the ghoul investigators who rush in, and he survives. Fortunately, he still has one kakuhou left, so he attacks Juuzou when he appears, but is killed in return and completely dies.

Similarities with Kaneki Ken

He is the person who created White Kaneki, and after Yamori's death, Kaneki began to imitate his habits, thoughts, and torture methods. Kaneki's ruthless actions are depicted in a way that is reminiscent of Yamori. The difference is that he does not kill people for pleasure. Furthermore, Yamori's situation is similar to Kaneki's, as he calls for his mother while dying and uses childish language, which is sad.

A side note: A naive older brother

Although he has a cruel and disgraceful personality, he was not born this way, and his current personality was formed by the death of his mother and the torture of the investigators. Furthermore, he takes good care of Naki, who adores him, and has built a friendship with Nico, but he also worries that if he isn't strong, he will be taken away from him.

[Tatara] Profile

Tatara's front view

A character that appears in "Tokyo Ghoul". His rating is SS+. He is a kakujutsu user of the tail kaku. He is a senior member of Aogiri Tree and a close aide to the One-Eyed King. He has white hair and red eyes. He usually wears an iron mask and wears all-white clothing. He occasionally speaks Chinese. He is cold-hearted, but is gentle towards Eto, who is always with him.

Main Scenes of Action

After divert the CCG to Ward 11, he and the main force, including Eto, successfully raid the ghoul detention center in Ward 23. During the Owl subjugation operation, he attacks Amon, Takizawa, and the Fourth Division, who are blocking their passage by announcing that "the King is passing through," and kidnaps a large number of injured investigators to provide them to Kano as test subjects.

Tatara's unknown secret...

In fact, he is the younger brother of the leader of the Chinese ghoul fighting group "Red Tongue League", and holds a deep grudge against the CCG for killing his brother and all his friends. He has a particularly strong hatred for Houji, and is also searching for the whereabouts of his former comrade, the kagune.

Tail Kagune. Kagune users cover their upper body with Kagune, their heads transform into snakes, and release Rc cells with a high temperature of 4000 degrees from their mouths. The flames that emanate from his special kagune inherited from his brother are the reason for his red tongue, and it is likely that his nickname "Tatara" comes from this.

After losing a succession of executives in the previous battle, he now holds the commanding power of Aogiri Tree. Although his power has expanded, his cold-hearted attitude of eliminating compatriots who are not his allies and sometimes abandoning his subordinates has earned him the resentment of Kento and some others. However, he is always neutral and judges things calmly, and is also responsible for keeping his emotional subordinates in check.

Tatara's Revenge

His brother is a dangerous ghoul who has killed many special investigators, and Tatara himself is said to be even stronger than his brother, so he has the power to surpass other SS~SS+ rated ghouls. During the attack on Rushima, he fights off Houji's squad alone, but Takizawa rebels in revenge, and he is defeated by being pierced through the stomach. He dies from the physical damage he sustains and the poison of his feather ghoul, which has a unilateral advantage over his tail ghoul.

What is Tatara's tragic ending...?

According to a flashback, he witnessed what the One-Eyed King obtained during the Owl subjugation operation, and it is revealed that he is one of the few people who knew the truth about Eto and the King. It is still unknown how he met Eto, but his "See you later" remark on Rushima and his words just before he collapsed. Furthermore, in the anime, he is shown lovingly watching her play in the snow, suggesting that he had special feelings for Eto. He met his tragic end, unable to get his revenge or have his feelings conveyed to Eto, dying suddenly and not getting what he wanted.

Quite a strong man!? Just how strong is Tatara?!

Tatara's famous lines
Source: Tokyo Ghoul © Ishida Sui / Shueisha, Tokyo Ghoul:re Production Committee
He is considered to be in a fairly high position among the Aogiri Tree, as he often refers to himself as "king," and is believed to be acting under the will of the One-Eyed King. It is still unknown how much Tatara's fighting ability is, but it is known that he is at least SS-rated or higher. Although he has appeared since the beginning, he has never been shown fighting seriously, and if he has not shown any signs of being serious for such a long period of time, he must be a very important and strong character. I am also curious as to what his purpose is in cooperating with Professor Kano.

Tatara has immeasurable strength

Although we know that his rating is SS or higher, it is not yet determined, so it seems that the author's intention is that although Tatara is a strong character at this point, he still wants to keep secret how strong he really is. Tatara seems to have immeasurable strength, but because both of his eyes are red, he is not one-eyed, and we can see that he is not the one-eyed king either. If Tatara were to fight seriously in the future, he would likely display incredible power.

【Summary】

Thank you for reading to the end! I personally think that Yamori and Tatara are important characters. Yamori influenced the main character Kaneki, and Tatara is full of mysteries. Getting to know these two will definitely make the anime "Tokyo Ghoul" even more interesting!
