"BURN THE WITCH" is Tite Kubo's first new work since BLEACH, and both the one-shot and short-run serialized versions have been popular. At the end of 2023, "BURN THE WITCH #0.8," an anime based on the one-shot version, will be broadcast and streamed, creating a buzz. The series centers around two protagonists and features a diverse cast of characters. This article introduces the main characters! If you've read the original, this serves as a refresher, and if you haven't, this is a good read for background information!

Synopsis

The story is set in London, where 72% of deaths in London are related to beings known as dragons. Only residents of "Reverse London," the other side of London, can see these dragons. Even among them, only a select few can directly interact with them. Everyone else is unable to even recognize their existence. The protagonists, Ninny Spangcole and Noel Niihashi, are chosen to be "witches" and are tasked with protecting and managing the dragons.

Ninny Spangcole

This is the first protagonist of the story. She is a "witch" who is permitted to interact with dragons, and her partner is Noel Niihashi. While Ninny is a member of the Flute Squad along with Noeru, she has a strong desire to fight on the front lines and hopes to be promoted to the Tactical Squad. According to Noeru, there is no clear hierarchical relationship between the Flute Squad and the Tactical Squad. I think the image of promotion comes from Ninny's strong desire to join the Tactical Squad. For better or worse, she has a straightforward personality and experiences strong emotions. She is competitive and proud, but that doesn't mean she lacks common sense, as she does possess a sense of ethics and morality. While she works as a witch in Reverse London, she is also an idol in Front London in the group "Cesina Dies Twice." She serves as the group's leader, and is sometimes called "Nina-chan" by the members.

Noel Shinbashi

The second protagonist of this work. Like her senior, Ninny Spangcole, she is a "witch" and partners with her. Although she seems reluctant to defeat dragons, she is extremely skilled, and in the one-shot version, she defeats the Dark Dragon alone, demonstrating her strength to an extent. She refers to Ninny as "chan," but Ninny dislikes her every time she does so. She attends Front London as a high school student and is approached by her senior, Varga Barks, but she is uninterested and pays no attention to him. Her facial expressions rarely change, making her seem the opposite of Ninny, but she is actually quite forthright.

Virgo Burks

He is Noeru Shinbashi's senior at Front London. He has a crush on Noeru and repeatedly makes advances on her that could be considered sexual harassment, but she doesn't seem to pay him any attention. He dotes on his pet dog, Osushi-chan, and carries it around in the hood of his hoodie. He can be a bit of a joker, but he has a pure and straightforward personality. After being bitten by a dragon, he became "dragon-possessed" and is now under the watchful eye of Nini and Noeru.

Main Character Summary

Ninny Spangcole and Noeru Niibashi have contrasting personalities, but in battle, they overwhelm their enemies with their well-coordinated teamwork. It's so cool to see them work together in times of crisis. Noeru's senior, Virgo Burks, is a bit of a joker, but he's also a fascinating character with more to offer. While we've introduced the main characters this time, there are many other characters who appear, so if you're interested, be sure to check them out! That's all for now. Thank you for reading.
