"Weak Character Tomozaki-kun" focuses on the characters' personal growth, making it a fascinating work that goes beyond a typical romantic comedy. The second season is scheduled to air in January of next year, and some people are already looking forward to it. Since the first season aired in January 2021, some people may have forgotten the plot. For those people, we'd like to review the first season as a refresher before watching the second season!

The journey to conquer the divine game of life begins

The protagonist, Tomozaki Fumiya, is a gloomy, introverted character with no friends, let alone a girlfriend. Tomozaki is obsessed with playing "Attack Families" (AtaFami for short). Tomozaki is so skilled at AtaFami that he is ranked number one, and even his popular classmates are no match for him in the game. One day, he arranges to meet the second-ranked player in real life, but when he arrives at the meeting place, it turns out to be his classmate, Hinami Aoi. When Aoi finds out that the player she respected is actually Tomozaki, she is devastated and hurls harsh words at him. They get into an argument, but while Tomozaki calls life a crappy game, Aoi tells him that life is just as godly as AtaFami. In order to conquer the game of life and become a popular player, Tomozaki sets out to complete the tasks given to him by Aoi. His first task is a tough one: "talk to three female classmates." At first, it doesn't go well, but his speaking style strikes a chord with Nanami Minami, and gradually the girls in his class start to respond more favorably.

Aiming for a Happy Life

Tomozaki and Aoi go shopping for clothes to help them achieve a happy life. Aoi gives Tomozaki, who has no idea about fashion, excellent advice. Later, at a hamburger restaurant, Tomozaki accidentally bumps into his classmate, Fuka Kikuchi, who works part-time there. Seeing this, Aoi declares with a fearless laugh that Fuka is his target. At school, Yuzuru Izumi, a classmate with a happy life, asks Tomozaki to teach her how to play AtaFami. Yuzuru is overwhelmed by Tomozaki's passionate speech about AtaFami, ignoring the fact that she's a beginner, but is slightly impressed by his enthusiasm. Meanwhile, Tomozaki was determined to ask Fuka out to the movies. Aoi's next assignment was to ask Fuka out on a date.

The Student Council Election Has Started!

When Tomozaki was approached by his handsome, popular classmate, Mizusawa Takahiro, he wondered what he wanted. Mizusawa explained that he was impressed by Tomozaki's passion for AtaFami. Mizusawa then invited Tomozaki to go out to dinner with the girls. However, what was supposed to be just an outing turned into a challenging mission: buying a birthday present for a classmate. The student council elections begin at school, and naturally, Aoi runs for office. Aoi then assigns him the task of recommending her rival, Minami Nanami. Not only does this put him in indirect competition with Aoi, but Aoi's recommender is a formidable opponent: Mizusawa. As Tomozaki and Minami talk, he realizes they share common beliefs and vows to do his best as her recommender.

Minami Nanami's Concerns

The day of the student council election finally arrives, and the candidates are due to speak. It's time for Aoi and Tomozaki to battle it out like players in AtaFami. The election goes off without a hitch, but Minami's behavior afterward becomes strange. Minami began studying late into the night and arriving early for club activities every day, leading those around her to worry that she was overdoing it. Fuka felt that Aoi was the reason why Minami was overdoing it. Tomozaki decided to ask Minami what she really meant, but Minami insisted that she just wanted to beat Aoi. Understanding her feelings, Tomozaki felt conflicted.

Summer Training Camp Begins

Summer vacation has begun. Speaking of summer vacation, it's packed with events for the real world. As usual, Aoi is giving Tomozaki assignments to help him live a fulfilling life. His days are busy, rehearsing dates with Fuka, actually inviting her out to the movies, and preparing for summer camp. Even if that weren't enough, Aoi keeps giving him new assignments for various occasions. While he's at the mercy of the assignments, Aoi, Minami, and Mizusawa come to Tomozaki's house to discuss summer camp. The purpose of summer camp is actually to bring together Yuzuru and Nakamura, who have mutual feelings for each other. On the day of camp, Tomozaki heads to the campsite, unable to hide his anxiety. His date with Fuka revealed an assignment for Tomozaki, and he's feeling anxious about that too. He ends up participating in a riverside barbecue, the ultimate in fulfilling life experiences. As everyone works together to prepare and have fun, his prejudice against fulfilling life gradually fades.

The Biggest Challenge

After the barbecue, they plan a haunted house, hoping to create an opportunity for Yuzuru, Nakamura, and Nakamura to get together. The distance between the two seems to be slowly but steadily narrowing. Their heartwarming relationship brings wry smiles to everyone's faces. When Tomozaki is called by Aoi, he realizes that in the game of life, there are both characters and players, and that the choice of which path to take is different for each individual, a concern everyone faces. The challenge Aoi gives him is to confess his feelings to Fuka. Tomozaki is about to reach a major turning point in the game of life. However, he and Aoi clash over the challenge. Although Tomozaki becomes estranged from Aoi for a time and loses confidence, Fuka notices his growing self. Moved by this, Tomozaki decides to speak with Aoi again.
