A Story Focused on Annette
While all members of the selected group play an active role in volume three of the original manga, the story focuses particularly on Annette. Annette could be considered the de facto protagonist of Volume 3. Annette has amnesia and is unaware of her upbringing. Reunion with Mother
After successfully completing their mission to capture the corpse, the four members of the selected team—Monica, Tia, Annette, and Erna—enjoy a brief respite at a resort in the south of the Republic. One day, a woman appears before them. She appears to be in her mid-30s and has a gentle demeanor. The woman's name was Matilda, and it turned out to be Annette's mother. Annette had lost her memory and didn't even know who her parents were, but she finally got to meet her mother. Meanwhile, Annette and her friends discovered that Matilda had been the victim of a theft. They tracked down a group of criminals targeting tourists and decided to help retrieve Matilda's stolen tools.
Matilda's True Identity
After Annette and her friends successfully retrieved the stolen tools, Monica discovered that Matilda was a spy for the Galgado Empire. Monica insists that Matilda should be handed over to the Army, but is persuaded by Tia to help Matilda escape. Meanwhile, Klaus and the other members of the non-selected group are informed that Tia and the others have gone missing, and Klaus takes Lily with him to search for them. It has become known that an Imperial spy is hiding in the entertainment district where Tia and the others were, and the Army has laid siege to the area. As Klaus continues his search, he encounters a sniper named "White Spider," a member of the spy group "Snake." He lets him get away, but he manages to extract information about the Serpent.
Matilda's Final Moments
Matilda's true nature was cruel, and Annette was not her biological daughter, but a child she had found. She had found her, not to raise her lovingly, but to use her as a spy. Furthermore, to make them appear to be biological mother and daughter, she had plastic surgery to preserve her mother's features and blinded one of her eyes. She abused her on a daily basis, and Annette's memory loss was due to the shock of the abuse. She said the abuse was "disgusting," and even though they weren't related by blood, she repeatedly did things a parent shouldn't do. Despite knowing Matilda's true identity, Tia let her escape. However, Annette, who had seen through his true identity, noticed a bomb planted in Matilda's toolbox and successfully killed her by switching the bomb. Annette killed Matilda because she was enraged by the fact that he had lied to her and tried to blow her up.
Summary of Volume 3 of the Manga
Not only did the selected team play a major role, but this was also an interesting episode, especially as we learned about Annette's past.
