"I've Been Killing Slimes for 300 Years and Maxed Out My Level," which will finally begin airing in Spring 2021, is based on a light novel with 15 volumes already published. The comic is currently being serialized on Gangan Online and has been adapted into a manga up to volume 7. The genre is a fantasy "Narou-kei," and the highlight of the series is its "homely comedy that doesn't try too hard"! Today, we'll be introducing the plot from the comics ahead of the release of the "I've Been Killing Slimes for 300 Years" anime!
Azusa, a corporate slave who met a tragic end in her previous life
Azusa lives a carefree life as the "Witch of the Highlands," but in her previous life, she met a tragic end as Azusa Aizawa. She was 27 years old and worked every day, without love or play. She worked 50 consecutive shifts at a brutal company that ignored the Labor Standards Act, eventually losing consciousness at work and never returning home. However, when she finally collapsed, her colleagues frantically called her name and called an ambulance, suggesting she wasn't disliked at work. I wondered if she hadn't considered changing jobs given how awful the company was, but perhaps Azusa in her previous life was a responsible person who lived solely for her work.
Born into a New World as an Eternal 17-Year-Old
After her death, Azusa Aizawa's soul is sent to a god named Mega Mega. There, the god offers to grant Azusa, who suffered such a tragic past life, a wish in her next life. Upon hearing this, Azusa requests immortality. Her request was readily accepted, and she was asked if she had any other wishes. However, Azusa was content to simply live a leisurely, slow life, and asked for nothing else.
Why is Azusa Forever 17?
While most works about reincarnation, rather than transference, typically begin as babies or children, Azusa begins as a 17-year-old. The reason given by Mega Mega God, who reincarnated Azusa into this world, was that "a young girl would be better" and "I personally like 17-year-olds." As a result, Azusa wakes up on the plateau and suddenly begins her second life in a 17-year-old body. While idols often talk about being "forever 17," they do include a childhood, and Azusa has been "17 since birth," so she can be said to be literally "forever 17."
The story takes place after 300 years of slow living.
The title of this work is "300 Years of Killing Slimes and Unknowingly Reached Max Level," but if we follow the original story, we won't see much of the 300 years of slime-killing or the process of reaching Level MXA. Instead, the first episode of the anime seems to begin 300 years after Azusa's reincarnation. Until then, she'd slept as much as she wanted, hunted the minimum number of slimes necessary, and tilled her fields. For 300 years, she'd truly enjoyed the leisurely, slow life she'd always dreamed of.
300 Years Later: A Major Turning Point
The starting point of Azusa's second life is a status measurement at the guild. Immediately after her reincarnation, Azusa registers as an adventurer to cash in the magic stones she obtained by defeating slimes. Because she had just been reincarnated, her level was 1 and her skills were quite ordinary, except for the "immortality" skill. However, 300 years later, a new receptionist, out of curiosity, measures Azusa's stats, finding that she has reached the maximum level of 99... This makes Azusa famous, and her slow life begins to evolve into a more lively one.
Laika the Red Dragon Comes to See Her, Hearing Rumors of Her Strength
Rumors that Azusa is level 99 spread quickly, and adventurers began coming to her house to test their skills, gradually distancing her from her slow life. Eventually, even the Red Dragon heard about her and showed up... When challenged to a test of strength, Azusa reluctantly agreed, overwhelmingly defeating the Red Dragon. The dragon surrendered and returned to its home to collect the repair costs for Azusa's destroyed house.
The Red Dragon Returns as a Beautiful Girl
After her house was destroyed, Azusa decided to stay the night in the village. The villagers warmly welcomed her, and she spent a lively and fulfilling day interacting with so many people for the first time in a while. Then, the next day, a beautiful girl visited Azusa. Azusa cried out in surprise when she learned that this beautiful girl was the Red Dragon she had fought the day before. After further accusations (mainly about the dragon's human form and the fact that it was a girl), Raika offered to pay Azusa the compensation and asked to be her apprentice. At first, Azusa was hesitant, fearing she might lose her slow life, but when she heard that she would help with housework, she immediately agreed. Thus, Azusa's first family member, Raika, arrived in her home.
Azusa and Raika Become the Guardians of Furata Village
Since Raika was going to live with them, Azusa took her to Furata Village to introduce herself. At first, the villagers were upset by the introduction of a dragon, but when they saw that it was Azusa's introduction and Laika's earnest attitude, they were happy to welcome her. (Mainly because Laika is cute, it seems.) When Laika arrived in the village, her first concern was the village's weak magical defenses and the lack of countermeasures against ground attacks. Laika told Azusa that in the future, evil people might harm the villagers in order to defeat Azusa, so Azusa decided to create barriers with Laika's help. One was a defensive barrier against magical attacks, and the other was a barrier that automatically captured people with evil intentions. These two barriers resolved the village safety measures that had been debated for 500 years, and the village came to be known as "a village protected by a great barrier created by a witch and a dragon."
An Unexpectedly Difficult Enemy? Slime's Revenge
"Slimes won't take revenge on me, so I'll definitely defeat them!" That's what Azusa had said, but over the past 300 years, she'd hunted countless slimes... and her actions had resulted in the birth of a slime hell-bent on revenge. One day, a girl named Farfa, who calls Azusa "Mama," visits her house and tells her that her younger sister, Shalsha, is trying to kill her. Azusa has no recollection of being called "Mama" or having her life threatened. However, Shalsha appears before Azusa, burning with a desire for revenge and surrounded by a sinister aura.
The True Identity of Falfa and Shalsha
Azusa was confused when she was told they would "avenge the deaths of the slimes," but when she heard that the two were "spirits born from the souls of murdered slimes," it made sense to some extent. However, their determination was extraordinary. Shalsha had been saving mana for 50 years solely to defeat Azusa, and had mastered the "Evil-Slaying Magic," which nullified Azusa's magic for a few hours. It was a final weapon specialized solely for defeating Azusa, and Azusa even left a will and prepared to die. However, Shalsha's magic was only for use against Azusa. Against anyone else, she was just a slime, and was defeated by Laika with a single finger.
The Two Become a New Family
After being defeated by Laika, Shalsha lost her magical powers and will be unable to use the Evil-Slaying Magic for at least the next few decades. Having lived only for revenge, Sharsha becomes depressed and unsure of what to do next, but her sister Farfa persuades her to give up on revenge. After Azusa heals Sharsha's injuries, she has a change of heart and decides to return to her former home. However, it is an old shack where no one seems to go near. Upon hearing this, Azusa asks the two if they would like to live together, and the two begin living as Azusa's daughters. Incidentally, it seems that living for 300 years has made her overflow with maternal instinct, and when Sharsha called her "mother", it pierced her heart.
The Uninvited Troublemaker
Adventurers, dragons, slime fairies, and various other races have heard rumors about Azusa and visited her home. One day, however, an even more troublesome visitor arrives. Her name is Harukara. Upon meeting her, the "elf with a lewd body" bursts into tears and begs for help. Based on the idea that "elves are attacked by orcs," they mistakenly assume she has come seeking help after being attacked by orcs. However, upon hearing that she is actually being targeted by Beelzebub, the King of Flies, they silently close the door to protect their peaceful lives.
The Witch of the Highlands vs. Greater Demons
Azusa initially tried to drive Harukara away, but eventually gave in to her crying and decided to protect her. To protect against external attacks, she created a "demon-repelling barrier" around the house, and Harukara stayed within the barrier for a while. However, by the time the barrier was set up, Beelzebub had transformed into a fly and infiltrated the house. He emerged and challenged Azusa to a duel. A duel between the two powerful demons would inevitably cause damage to the building, so the two decided to fight at a distance. However, during their journey, Azusa passed through the barrier, and the demon Beelzebub became its prey... Without a fight, Beelzebub was rendered incapacitated and carried home.
It Was All a Misunderstanding on Harukara's Part
Harukara and the others had been desperately running away, thinking Beelzebub was trying to kill them, but in fact, Beelzebub had taken a liking to Harukara's nutritious liquor and was asking them to resume production. Upon hearing this, Harukara's attitude completely changed. He relocated the factory near Azusa's home and decided to restart the factory while living in her home. Despite causing constant trouble due to his misunderstanding, Harukara has now become part of Azusa's family. Incidentally, Azusa describes Harukara as a "troublesome junior."
The Whole Family Heads to Laika's Parents' Home
"I'm going back to my parents' home," Laika suddenly blurts out, sending Azusa into a panic. Azusa desperately tries to stop her, but Laika's reason for returning isn't to leave, but to her sister's wedding. Apparently, dragon weddings are quite casual, allowing walk-ins, so Azusa and the rest of the family decide to attend Laika's sister's wedding. Riding on the back of Laika, who has transformed into a dragon, the group heads for Laika's family home, Mount Rocco Volcano.
An Uninvited Guest Invades a Wedding
When Azusa and her friends arrived at Mount Rokko, the dragons were in the middle of their first party, enjoying a feast with many dragons. Then, a group of blue dragons, led by Flatterte, appeared. They were at odds with Laika and the other red dragons, and had heard about the wedding and wanted to disrupt it. The banquet hall quickly became a battlefield. However, this was an inter-species issue, and Azusa felt she couldn't involve her family, so she stayed a distance to protect them. However, a blue dragon appeared and threatened to harm Azusa and her friends and ruin the wedding, angering Azusa. Needless to say, the blue dragons were exterminated by Azusa alone.
The Witch's House Cafe Opens
Until now, Azusa had respected the village's independence and hadn't participated in festivals. However, after hearing about the festival, Falfa, Shalsha, and her family became enthusiastic. Thinking that now that Azusa has a family, unlike her previous days when she was alone, she can share the joy, she decided to slightly renovate her house and open the Witch's House Cafe. On opening day, the villagers, having heard rumors, formed a long line two hours in advance. Even Beelzebub ended up working as a waitress.
Is the new family member a ghost girl?
After being driven out of the elf settlement due to the Beelzebub incident, Harukara built a new factory in the town of Nascute. However, some ominous rumors have started to circulate... Around 200 years ago, a 15-year-old girl named Rosalie committed suicide at the site where Harukara built his factory. Her ghost still lingers there as a ghost. Beelzebub and Azusa and the others arrive at the site to help, attempting to exorcise the spirit with force, but Rosalie refuses to leave just yet. Azusa and her friends somehow manage to get Rosalie out of the situation, and Azusa welcomes her into her family, telling her that even though she was so unhappy in life, "it won't be a punishment if you're happy after death."
Azusa and her party now head to the Demon Realm.
Azusa, who previously quelled a dragon conflict, is to be awarded the Demon Medal in the Peace category by the demons. The award ceremony will be held in the Demon Realm. Just like with Laika's wedding, the whole family will be attending this time. The group boards the Leviathan that has arrived to pick them up and heads to the Demon Realm. There, the Demon King Pekora awaits, warmly welcoming Azusa and her friends. However, Harukara makes her usual clumsy mistake, and things get out of hand...
"I've Been Killing Slimes for 300 Years and Maxed Out My Level" Summary
So far, we've introduced the plot up to Volume 3 of the manga. Since Pekora appears on the anime's official website, it's likely that the anime will cover at least up to this point. While it's unclear how much of the story will be adapted, it's a work that's sure to be exciting to watch.
