This science fiction anime was originally created by GAINAX and directed by Anno Hideaki.
A total of 26 episodes aired on TV Tokyo (TNX) from October 4, 1995 to March 27, 1996. The manga version preceded the anime, having been serialized in Monthly Shonen Ace since the February 1995 issue. Because the manga began first, many people believe that the original work is the manga, but it is the anime that is the source material. A remake titled "Evangelion: 3.0 You Can (Not) Redo" aired from 2007 to 2009, and is planned to consist of four parts.
This work depicts the battle between 14-year-old boys and girls who become Evangelion pilots and the "Angels," with an emphasis on portraying emotions such as the relationships and various conflicts that arise. Adam, the First to Wash Ashore on Earth
Someone (a lifeform already existing in the universe) scattered the Fruit of Life (Adam's Egg) and the Fruit of Knowledge (Lilith's Egg), which washed ashore on Earth. After washing ashore at the Earth's Antarctic, Adam gave birth to the 3rd to 17th Angels. Adam, who possesses the Fruit of Life, is granted eternal life, but because he lacks the Fruit of Knowledge, he lacks human-like intelligence.
Adam, who caused the Second Impact
Before the First Angel Adam and the other Angels awakened, Seele carried out a plan to return Adam to a fetal state using the "Spear of Longinus." This process resulted in the Second Impact, which was artificially induced.

The Spear of Longinus was discovered in the Dead Sea. It erodes A.T. fields and is the very definition of an anti-A.T. field. It has the power to halt the activity of Adam and Lilith, the sources of life, making it a true trump card for humanity. It's believed that when two sources of life washed ashore on Earth, someone predicted an unforeseen event and sent it to Earth as a sort of security device.
Adam Separated into Body and Soul
Adam's body, reduced to a fetus, was hardened with Bakelite and transported to NERV Headquarters, where it was then transplanted into Gendo's right hand. His soul resided in a male body provided by SEELE. This body, inhabited by his soul, became the 17th Angel, Tabris (Nagisa Kaworu), an Angel created by humanity itself.
The Angels Seeking Adam
The Angels attacking Tokyo-3 are seeking to fuse with Adam, who is said to lie deepest underground.
By fusing with Adam, they hope to cause the Third Impact and destroy humanity.
"I see, so that's what it is... Lilith."
This is a line from the 17th Angel, Tabris (Nagisa Kaworu), who has realized everything.
It was believed that Adam was sleeping in the deepest part of the underground of Tokyo-3, but in episode 24, "The Last Sinner," it is revealed that it was Lilith who was sleeping underground.
This marks the end of the battle between humanity (the Lilith) and the Angels, with humanity (the Lilith) winning.
Gendo Seeks to Fuse with Rei
Gendo's goal was to reunite with his wife, Yui, who had been absorbed into Eva Unit-01 10 years earlier.
By fusing Adam, which he had absorbed into his right hand, with Rei (Lilith), Gendo attempted to cause the Third Impact, reduce all living things to LCL, and become one perfect life form. He believed that by doing so, he would be able to reunite with Yui. However, Rei chose Shinji and rejected Gendo, preventing Gendo's goal from being fulfilled.
