Even though they both liked each other, they were too proud and thought, "I'll go out if the other person confesses first," but nothing progressed, so their relationship changed to "how to get the other person to confess." This battle of wits (some might disagree) between two geniuses (or idiots) is back with a slightly more meaningful title! With the second season starting to air, we'd like to introduce one of the main characters, Shinomiya Kaguya, as a recap of the first season and a preview of the second!

This is the character Shinomiya Kaguya is: Part 1. She's the daughter of the huge conglomerate, the Shinomiya Group!

Kaguya Shinomiya's First Appearance

She is the daughter of the Shinomiya Group, one of Japan's largest conglomerates. A true lady of means, she has received a special education since childhood. Her natural talents include excellence in both academics and sports, making her a true genius who displays exceptional talent in all fields. While she has a crush on the student council president, Shirogane, and their love is reciprocated, her extremely prideful nature prevents her from being as cute as confessing her feelings herself, and she devises all sorts of schemes to get Shirogane to confess.

A naive, sheltered young lady

She's a sheltered girl who has lived her life without any exposure to unnecessary information, which gives her a naive side. For example, she's completely ignorant of sex, which makes her embarrassed when she doesn't understand the meaning of her first sexual experience; she's embarrassed when she can't stop laughing at dirty jokes at an elementary school level; and she's not very good with social media or technology.

The Character of Shinomiya Kaguya Part 2

Ice Kaguya

Although she usually plays the role of the sociable student council vice president, her true personality is as emotionless and sociable as ice. Her true personality is the latter, and when she first met Shirogane, Kaguya was described as ice, making her difficult to approach. Even now, glimpses of her dark side are still visible, and Ishigami initially feared her. However, her true nature is one of deep compassion for others, and that hasn't changed.

Kaguya Curses Fujiwara

Kaguya's Dark Side

There are many instances in which Kaguya, without a shred of pride, directs her resentment and curses at Fujiwara, who effortlessly takes on the tasks she wants to do but can't or the positions she wants to fill. However, Fujiwara's usual pattern is to steer Kaguya in the direction she wants, and then turn his back on her, which has become a template.

Kaguya Shinomiya: This is Her Character, Part 3: Kaguya Becomes an Idiot

Kaguya is brilliant and displays exceptional talent in all areas, but when it comes to getting Shirogane to confess, she resorts to roundabout strategies that suggest she's misguided in her efforts, and her plans generally fail. There's a fine line between being an idiot and a genius.

It's like I'm the one

It's like I'm the one

Even Kaguya shows her true self (a fool) in front of her trusted servant, Hayasaka. And at those times, she often utters, "It's like I want to do ____ with the president!!" This "it's like I'm the one" construction is a phrase Kaguya often utters throughout the series, and it's so true it's undeniable.

This is what Kaguya Shinomiya is like as a character, Part 4: Kaguya Shinomiya's signature phrase: "Oh, cute."

Oh, cute face

Kaguya Shinomiya's signature phrase is "Oh, cute." While the phrase "Oh, cute" with a scornful expression appears many times throughout the series, Kaguya has never actually said "Oh, cute" with this expression. This is the kind of phrase Kaguya would say if she were giving up, and it mainly appears in Shirogane's mind. However, it seems like it's finally been lifted recently.

Notable Points in Kaguya Season 2 #1: Kaguya Becomes Even Stupid

In the first season, Kaguya engaged in a battle of wits, but her roundabout tactics always backfired, making her, to put it mildly, a bit of a fool. However, in Season 2, her stupidity escalates even further! The initial battle of wits to get him to confess fades away. It even becomes questionable whether this is really a battle of wits between geniuses. The title "Battle of Wits Between Geniuses" has been removed.

Kaguya Causes Trouble Even for Hayasaka

Kaguya Causes Trouble for Hayasaka

Kaguya's IQ drops as soon as Shirogane is involved, putting even her servant, Hayasaka, at her mercy. Hayasaka, a dutiful servant, is a good confidant and secret ally to Kaguya, but as Kaguya has recently become increasingly foolish, he sometimes makes harsh remarks. Hayasaka even says that she wasn't this stupid back then.

Notable Points in Kaguya Season 2 #2: Kaguya Still Curses

Kaguya's pride naturally leads her to do enviable things that she herself cannot, and she has a habit of cursing Fujiwara in particular. This is Kaguya's true side, so to speak, and she hurls harsh words at him in her mind. Shirogane, who understands Kaguya deeply, and Ishigami, who has a keen intuition, are aware of this side of Kaguya and fear her.

Kaguya Quickly Turns Her Hand

However, after a series of events, she ends up turning her hand. This cycle of jealousy → curse → turning her hand back continues to appear in Season 2. While initially the curse was only directed at Fujiwara, it now seems to be directed at other people as well. This is another highlight of Season 2.

Notable Points in Season 2 of Kaguya #3: Kaguya's Not Stupid

This series is primarily comedy-driven, and Kaguya appears stupid throughout the story, but only when interacting with the student council. In reality, she's a smart, compassionate, and strong-willed woman. In episodes involving Ishigami, we'll see her compassionate, sensible side in Season 2.

The Ice Princess Kaguya

She's originally cold as ice, the daughter of the scheming Shinomiya family. Ishigami, aware of her true nature, fears her, and she sometimes displays a devilish side. We'll see this duality in Season 2 as well.

[Kaguya-sama: Love is War] Summary of Season 2 of Kaguya Shinomiya

The first season of Kaguya-sama ended with rave reviews, and we're all eagerly awaiting Season 2. I believe the second season will see an even more powerful Kaguya. A rebroadcast of the first season has been announced, so it might be a good idea to watch it again before the second season starts! Season 2 of Kaguya-sama: Love is War will begin airing in April!
