Re:ZERO − Starting Life in Another World is known for its often grotesque scenes, including Subaru's Return by Death. However, another secret to its popularity is its adorable heroines. From girly to tomboyish, and even petite to mature women, there's a wide variety of heroines. So, this time, I've humbly ranked these heroines in order of "personal" cuteness! Please take a moment to enjoy!
Tenth Place: Echidna
Our tenth place pick is Echidna, the "Witch of Greed"! Although she didn't appear in the first season of the anime, she will undoubtedly be a key character in the second season. Her attire resembles mourning attire, but she looks somewhat similar to Emilia... There's a lot I'd like to write about, including her relationship with Subaru and other things, but revealing everything would be a major spoiler for the second season, so I've decided to place her in tenth place.
Ninth Place: Theresa van Astrea
Our ninth place pick is Thearesia, the former "Sword Saint." As you can tell from her name, she is the wife of Wilhelm van Astrea, also known as the Sword Demon. Though she was known as the Sword Saint, she was not particularly combative, and instead had a girlish, flower-loving personality. However, her skills were top-notch, and she was born with the special ability known as the "Blessing of the Dead," which allows her to inflict irreparable wounds on others. This ability even led to the end of the Demi-Human War. However, 15 years prior to the events of the story, while slaying the White Whale, her Sword Saint's blessing was lost (and transferred to Reinhard), and she was killed in battle.
Eighth Place: Elsa Granhiert
Our pick for eighth place goes to Elsa, also known as the "Intestine Hunter"! She appears early in the story and becomes Kazuma's first major turning point. There are many witches in this work, and Erza also exudes a bewitching witch-like aura. However, contrary to her beautiful appearance, the things she does are extremely cruel! When hired as an assassin, she has a sadistic personality, such as slicing open her target's stomach and pulling out their intestines, and is a notorious character who is even wanted for vomiting. Incidentally, she is 23 years old, but it's not just her appearance that makes her seem more mature than her age, but also the mature acting of voice actress Noto Mamiko.
Seventh Place: Petra Leyte
In seventh place is Petra, a villager who lived in Arlam Village! Some people might think she would rank higher, considering she's a cute young girl (lol). She's friendly and quickly becomes attached to Subaru, and after the magical beast incident, she developed special feelings for him. While the villagers dislike Emilia, who is half-elf, Petra and the other children are kind enough to ignore her and escape the village with Emilia in a carriage.
Will Petra play a major role in Season 2?
In Season 1, Petra was merely a "village girl," but in Season 2, she takes over as an apprentice maid at Roswaal's mansion, replacing Rem, who disappeared due to certain circumstances. I ranked her seventh because I haven't seen the full video yet, but I'm sure her ranking will skyrocket once Season 2 starts! She looks so cute in her maid outfit. In Re:Zero, Subaru is in love with Emilia, but Rem is the only one who clearly has romantic feelings for him. However, as mentioned earlier, Petra also has feelings for Subaru, and with Rem away, it's now Petra who has feelings for him... Though she's only 12, she's a responsible lady inside, so she might join the women's battle for Subaru in the future.
Sixth Place: Beatrice
Our sixth place pick is Beatrice, the librarian of the Forbidden Books Archive in Roswaal's mansion! She can freely move between rooms in the mansion using Door Crossing, but Subaru manages to open this door, which is said to be difficult to find every time. Although she looks like a young girl, her attitude is bigger than that of an adult, and she even acts overbearingly towards Subaru. However, she also has a caring side, following her contract and trying to protect Subaru to the end when he's in danger. There were many mysteries surrounding Beatrice, but with the arrival of Echidna, these secrets will likely be revealed in the second season.
Who transforms the mature Beatrice into an innocent young girl?
Beatrice is usually aloof and overbearing, but there's a sinful man (?) who can instantly transform her into a maiden. His name is Puck! A spirit who usually accompanies Emilia, Beatrice calls her "Nii-cha" and displays a clingy personality with an expression she doesn't usually show. Because she loves Puck so much, she is sometimes used by Subaru, who threatens to tell on her. In fact, Puck and Beatrice have a lot in common, which will likely be revealed in Season 2, so be sure to look forward to it!
Fifth Place: Crusch Karsten
In fifth place is Crusch, who, like Emilia, is also a candidate for king. At the age of 17, she served as the head of the Duke of Karsten family, and now at 20, she is said to be the leading candidate to become king. In one word, Crusch is the perfect superhuman! Ability, personality, talent, and family background...she excels in everything, and with the "weather vane's blessing," she can even see through lies to a certain extent. Her considerable swordsmanship means she is known as the "war princess," and she led the charge in the battle against the White Whale, encouraging her comrades. She herself used her "Hundred Men's One Sword" technique to inflict great damage on the White Whale multiple times.
Fourth Place: Felt
Fourth place goes to Felt, who made a living by pickpocketing in the slums. She's the girl who stole Emilia's insignia, which sparked the incident early in the story. She often hangs out in the slums with an elderly giant named Grandpa Rom, who is like a grandfather to Felt. In fact, the name "Felt" was given to her by Grandpa Rom when he found her in the slums, and he's also Felt's godfather. Standing at just 150cm tall, she has a tomboyish and suspicious personality, and possesses the divine protection of the wind, allowing her to move at high speeds.
From a nameless slum girl to a king!?
Felt grew up in the slums until she was 14, but her life changed completely when she met Reinhard. After the Gut Hunting incident was over, Reinhard came to her rescue, and, surprised by what she had, forcefully took her away. The next time she appeared, she was dressed like a princess, wearing a dress. Reinhard recommends Felt as a surviving member of the royal family to the royal selection, and Felt reluctantly joins the selection process to save Grandpa Rom.
Third Place: Emilia
In third place is the main heroine? Emilia! Due to the presence of a powerful and outrageous heroine and her limited screen time in the middle of the first season, she was overshadowed, leading to jokes like "Who was that again?" when she first appeared, making her somewhat of a tragic heroine... (lol) But if you look at her objectively, she's the main heroine, so naturally, she's a beautiful girl! She cannot leave someone in trouble alone, and even when she is in trouble herself, she always puts others first. As a half-elf, she is persecuted and disliked by the villagers due to her resemblance to the "Witch of Envy." However, she has a very kind heart and works hard behind the scenes to help them.
How old is Emilia?
When she first appeared, Emilia had a dignified expression and treated Subaru like a child. But as for her age... as a half-elf, she has a long lifespan, and is actually around 100 years old. Of course, it's no wonder Subaru is treated like a child... but in reality, he was only sleeping in the ice of Elior Forest, so despite his longevity, he lacks common sense and is thought to have a mental age of about 14. This makes him a more youthful, naive, and naive character than he looks. For some reason, he sometimes uses strange expressions like "I'm shocked." Incidentally, his elven blood also contributes to his slow aging, making him estimated to be around 18 years old.
Second Place: Ram
Second place goes to the twin maid, Ram! Like Emilia, she has been overshadowed by the character I chose as number one...but as you can see, she is still a beautiful girl. Ram's most distinctive feature is her sharp tongue towards Subaru! She frequently hurls abusive language at Subaru that makes it hard to believe your ears. The person Ram respects and adores is Roswaal. Ram is a member of the demon race, but lost her horn at a young age and is only able to survive thanks to Roswaal's regular supply of mana. As such, Ram's actions always come first, following Roswaal's orders. Incidentally, when she still had her horn, it seems she had fighting power that surpassed even Roswaal's.
Ram is at her cutest in the movie "Memory Snow"!
Ram is generally portrayed as a harsh character with a sharp tongue and a strict attitude, but in the movie "Memory Snow," she's portrayed as a slightly silly and cute character, a stark contrast! If you're a Ram fan, this is a must-see! Highlights include her overdressed like a Daruma doll because of the extreme cold, and the scene where she creates a snow sculpture of Roswaal and Subaru. While Rem calmly works as a maid, undeterred by the cold, Ram curls up shivering like a bad older sister, which was really good. Furthermore, in the snow sculpture scene, Subaru gives her a low score, and she strikes this pose, hoping for a higher score, asking, "So what?" - which is so cute and unlike Ram! It's rare to see Ram with such a big smile (lol).
Number One: Rem
Our top pick for the heroine ranking is... Rem, the younger of the twin maids! No matter where you rank them, Rem is probably number one. That's why I considered choosing a different character for number one, considering their unique qualities... but I just couldn't resist! No matter how you look at it, it's no exaggeration to say that she was the main heroine of the first season, even more so than the main heroine Emilia. Rem's best quality is her devotion to Subaru. At first, she tried to kill him, but after the monster incident, she fell head over heels for him. Her brave and honest demeanor captivated many viewers, and many were furious at the outcome of Rem's once-in-a-lifetime proposal to Subaru (lol).
Will Rem appear in the second season of the anime...?
Rem played such a major role in the first season. We can all look forward to seeing her in action in the second season, but... in the second season, Rem is attacked by the Witch's Cult's Deadly Sins of Greed and Gluttony, and as a result, she is stripped of her name and memories and falls into a coma. As a result, her existence is forgotten by everyone except Subaru, with the same effect as the White Whale's Vanishing Mist. Will Rem be able to wake up safely? That's something we'll want to keep an eye on.
How did it end up like this! The difference in how Rem and Ram are treated!
Rem and Ram, twin sisters, ranked first and second this time, but it seems there's a huge disparity in popularity between them. Personally, I like them both equally, but... February 2nd is their birthday, and they're currently being celebrated at various events. There was even an event held in the past where, for some reason, only Rem was celebrated as "Rem's birthday." I couldn't help but look for Ram, and she was clapping along with the other members in celebration of Rem. And the biggest difference between the two... is their bust size! Subaru, when pointing out the difference between them, also said, "Rem has bigger breasts!" Why? Even though they're twins... and even though they're big sisters...!
Heroine Ranking Summary
So far, we've introduced the heroines appearing in Re:Zero. Unfortunately, we only ranked them up to 10th place, so there were some heroines we couldn't introduce. However, there are many other fascinating heroines, such as Priscilla, Anastasia, and Frederica, the maid who works at Roswaal's mansion, who will also appear in the second season. Be sure to look forward to the second season of the anime!
